Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It has been suggested that I let everyone figure this out for themselves, So will go back underground in the deep dark hole.

Not supposed to. We had a heated discussion about that some time ago.
The big shows, no way.
But I mentioned the little club meets, where the members drive long distances and spend big bucks.
Sometimes a judge can "miss" something.....

Well Here is my take... I spent big bucks to go to the show...
I was on the road 6 hours each way and stayed in the hotel for two nights.

I sure didn't travel that distance to see a cock with a floppy comb (DQ) or a cock with white ear lobes( DQ) place among the top three.
I think it sends to wrong message to people who are looking for examples of really fine birds to place birds with DQ's.

This was a BIG show... NOT a county fair.

Seriously, if the APA wants to sell books, then folks need to be held accountable to the standard. Otherwise what's the point?

HOW about this.... Folks are going to brag about winning. Yet, they are unaware that the bird has some serious issues (DQs) because they weren't pointed out.

NOW BEFORE I get myself in BIG trouble.... I better go crawl in the hole that Culler was talking about LOL...

In reference to the white in the lobe.... it has to be a certain amount of white to be a DQ and I don't think that meets the DQ requirement. I am not saying it is ok, I will not breed for white earlobes. OK now that I have seen the birds... I was REALLY DISAPPOINTED in the show birds. I am a real nubby and I saw so many birds with BIG DQ and Faults.... split wings, tails too high, one of these guys pictured has an AWFUL tail! Bragging rights from this show would weigh more to me than a fair win, so you can't even trust the big show judges to award justly.

Lisa where there any other Marans Cockerels? Could it really be these were the only 3 that came to the party? I know I only saw 3 NH roos and maybe 3-4 SLW roos too....

I think ANY white in the lobe is a DQ, but we will need to have others chime in on that one...

There were other males. There was a whole row that was still roped off that I didn't get to see by the time I left.
These were judged already...

I got pics of more birds, but I thought everyone would want to see the BEST, the winners...

Even if they were the only 3 that came to the party ( which was not the case) with DQ's I don't think they are suppose to place.
There were marans down two long rows of tables. They were broken down into color catergories.

Black Coppers
Blue Coppers
Black
Blue
Silver Birchen
Wheaten
etc.

I think the lesson I learned here was that just because folks say that their bird was a winner at "such and such", you still need to see pics of the birds. What I find amazing when I look at ebay is how bad the photos are. Yet, no one seems to care or demand better / clearer photos. I see photos posted all the time where the bird is in the shadows so bad that you can not tell anything from the photo. . . .

I THINK Wynette said it was more than 50% positive white.... NOT SURE. That roo looked to be maybe 25% so he would not have been DQ'd.

WOW

I've not heard of that before...

I did look at the standard closer and see where it says in the general disqualifications section for color

Ear lobes.

a.) All Breeds where a red ear-lobe is specified.
1.) Positive enamel white
(see definition, pg. 10) (except as otherwise noted)

I would like to know where it says that the white is allowed on the ear lobe as long as it is less than 50% or how ever much.

Do you think we could get Wynette to join us in this conversation and fill in the blanks for us?
