Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Lisa, did you get NO pics of the Wheatens?? I would really like to see them! Prayers to you in FL with the ugly weather!! This is going to be a long, and I'm afraid, treacherous spring...

Lisa said that her camera died before she could get to the wheatens. I know Donna went too, but I don't know if she got any pics of the Marans cause I think she said they were judging them during the time she was there

Hi..o/

Could anyone tell me what breed of chicken's these are ? They was just give 2 me .lol The 2 hens here have black legs, light brown eggs.

AND ONE HAS YELLOW LEGS..

Hello Mr. Moore! Welcome to the thread!! Hard to say from the pics, but they may be a mix of Marans and Welsummers?? Just an out there guess on my part!

We are getting some of that nasty weather that the southern states have been experiencing over the last few days.
WINDY.... I was trying to work in the garden BUT it is just to windy.

The wind has my roos freaked out. I went into town for about an hour. Came back to find that one of my delaware cockerels ( about 9 months old) got loose and was scrapping with my oldest roo, a 9 lbs black copper marans rooster. I just finished cleaning up BOTH boys and putting them in their respective pens.... HONESTLY, what are these boys thinking? They should be leading their ladies to safety, some place not being subjected to this wind. Instead, they are deciding who could get the most scabs on their combs and wattles. Both of these boys are very gentle roos... My favorite two boys...

I guess the one that flew over the fence will be getting his wings clipped tomorrow! That would be the younger cockerel. When you way 9 lbs plus... you don't fly over fences too well LOL. There is something to be said about having LARGE fowl. My leghorns are a PITA to fence in because they can fly over the fences... LOVE the Big Butt birds for many reasons... ADD this to the list... They don't fly over fences very well LOL!
OMG my chickens are totally freaked out. I went to a book sale and came home and went into the backyard and nooo chickens anywhere...AND NO GREENHOUSE anywhere either!!! Just most of the plants that were in it just sitting in the middle of the backyard LOL! Apparently, the wind picked up the greenhouse and threw it about 50 ft and flipped it upside down. It is still all in one piece just upside down in front of the chicken pens lol. All the chickens came running up to me squawking and carrying on telling me all about the big bad disaster. There were 2 tiny silkie chicks running around outside one of the broody pens. I don't see how they could of gotten out except between the chicken wire so they were probably so freaked out they ran through it. The greenhouse went right over them haha. I had the posts buried 16 inches in the ground and they have stood up to 60 mph winds before for several winters so I'm thinking something must have picked it up and threw it! Well on the bright side, I was going to take the plants out of the greenhouse this weekend but I guess I don't have to now!

sounds like the crazy winds we had the other day here have definitely made their way to you now! Glad you guys are all ok, and that you can get the greenhouse put back without too much trouble.

Yeah!! Today, my Silkies made a contribution to the cause!! Sold 23 hatching eggs, and it covered the cost of the feed bill today, plus a wee bit more!

It's about time SOME CHICKENS around here started pulling their weight!

I gave away a Silkie pullet the other day to a young lady who wanted a house chicken. She was the only one of her color (Buff), and while she is very pretty, she only had 4 toes on one foot. This gal is so tickled with her, she has sent me 2 e-mails of pics already! Some showing off Buffy's new "dress", and some of her sitting on the gal's shoulder, and some of Buffy playing with some kittens!

I warned her to be cautious there, but gregarious Buffy seems to think the kittens are her babies, and covers them with her wings! How cute!! I'm so glad she is giving someone so much joy...it does a heart good.

Oh gosh, I know the feeling! Glad your chooks and greenhouse are ok! I swear, those Silkies are like mice, and can flatten themselves out to squeeze through the tiniest of gaps! Some of mine got into the main run with the Marans the other day, and I swear, their gate has only blown open an inch or so. We are still having a steady 35mph wind here today...I HATE IT! On the other hand, I'll take it any danged day over a tornado!! Stay safe down there you FL gals!!!

I hear ya...its really chilly out today with the wind. I think I am getting more and more narrowed down with my breeding pens tho! I'm really looking forward getting everything settled in and can get some of my extra girls to their new home.

The really crazy thing is that nothing is wrong with any of my plants except one 7ft tree got pulled out of its pot by the roots and it wasn't even near the edge of the greenhouse. It was in the dead center and not even close to touching the roof. All the other stuff even has the flower and all the leaves still on it. Really really strange! I am still doing head counts on my chickens. I think everyone is still here. At first I was afraid maybe the greenhouse might have landed on a few lol.

Debbie I'm glad you are selling some of those silkie eggs. People around here definitely seem more interested in silkies than the other breeds. That's funny about your Buffy silkie and the kittens. It sounds like she has a really good home. My buff silkie hen is my favorite silkie I want to get her a buff mate! I guess you are right about those sly silkies being able to squeeze through the tiny areas. I am going to have to watch them more closely. There was a little white one and a little partridge one out running around. I am truly amazed one of these barn cats didn't get them! I saw the lav orp rooster hiding back there so maybe he had protected them. He has been hanging out around the broody pens trying to adopt their babies

Yes, for sure! A lot of the old time farmers out here all have fond memories of their Mom's Silkies. How odd I thought at first, but these gals are laying fools, and I am getting medium sized eggs out of them, with yolks the same size as the Marans! Funny thing is, I had two cars of people asking to buy Buffy while I was sitting in the gas station waiting for her new owner! I told them all I'll have more chicks, so keep a look out for them on the free ads space!

Had to laugh, thinking of the Mortgage Lifter tomatoes and how the old farmers used to consider hogs and sheep the same, in the older days.
