82 posts Lisa thank you for all the pics. Wish I could have helped.... next time. I am with you, we need to show our chickens. I was looking at my FBCM roo today, he LOOKS so good after looking at these show birds. Well if you overlook all the MUD

Nice comb, one too many points, no thumb print, no white in his ear lobe, no split wings, tail the right angle, nice leg feathering, no white feathers anywhere, THANKS VICKI you helped me pick a real winner from my lot and to boot, I got a pullet that lays an egg that is a 7-8 and the others 6-7 so HOPING his offspring will get better egg color. In the Fall I can have new pullets for him that MAYBE lay a nice color egg too. I am kinda excited to see what I get next generation.

The winds from the storm... We had the runs covered with a tarp stapled to the runs with a LADDER (6ft tall step ladder) 2 boards and something else to keep the rain out of my muddy runs... WELL ALL THAT was blown off and on the ground.... those were some strong winds. No damage or trees down that we saw. So all is good. We worked on another run and moved some birds into the fixed one. So now my eggs will not be sooooooo muddy... maybe....

I hear ya about muddy runs and crazy winds! Boo to both of those!

And you are more than welcome! I'm happy to help when I can. I'm just really glad you didn't cull that boy...if I lived closer...I probably would have come over and

Night all!

I've been popping Tylenol for two days now. I don't handle barometric pressure changes very well at all!
Good night every one... This bad weather, foul weather, has at least let me get caught up on all my email and internet stuff.
Tomorrow, I may try to get the taxes done.

I have to say - combs and ear lobes are such a small percentage of the points. At shows, the bulk of points comes from type which is why so many of the breeders I've been consulting have been telling me not to fuss about combs or even leg feathers in the beginning. I have to build the foundation first - TYPE!

I am fortunate to have email access to a master breeder--he says about the same thing. Type is most important. However, it's hard to see pictures of type, and pictures are so much fun!

Type is of the utmost importance, BUT , a DQ is a DQ! They are there in the SOPs for a reason. One is not any less of a DQ than another, they are DISQUALIFYING FAULTS! A Squirrel tail is no less of a DQ than a side sprig. The reasons being if they are bred forward, it will make it just that much harder for the population to breed out! When people show and win with obvious DQs, the problem expands and continues, hence the problems we are having with this breed now. Not that this is the only breed with problems, but in it's infancy in this country, we sure aren't doing the Marans any justice by making light of age old DQs and letting people win and pass them on. Hey Don.... what do you think about this girl?

Vicki, It is really hard from a picture to pin point something like this. This could be related to the crooked neck inherited problem and would be a recessive fault. I have also seen this or something similiar when fowl were vaccinated by someone that didn't know what they were doing. If you do the Coryza shot too high on the neck sometimes you will get a knot like this.
