Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Math~

Thank you very very much for posting photos of the birds. Loved seeing the blues! Maybe this year I can work on getting a new monitor for my computer or a maybe it just needs a new graphics card, will have to talk to me daddy about that because it would sure be nice to see photos clearly but with my current monitor it shows everything blurry.
I am hoping to make it to the Stevenson Washington show April 21st and 22nd. I will be taking my handy dandy camera.... not sure I will be taking any birds, though I would love to take a trio of my Barnevelders for kicks and giggles but with only one rooster right now....I don't know if I want to chance it. I would take some Marans but I only have 9 adult birds now...no way I am taking a chance with them and certainly not with my Lil' Bill. I'm a wuss...I know.

HI DON!!!!!!! Good to have you back with us!
I cannot see what you are talking about on the Blue Birchen comb due to my monitor...could you help a girl out here and elaborate for me.

Thank you!

Vicki, It is really hard from a picture to pin point something like this. This could be related to the crooked neck inherited problem and would be a recessive fault. I have also seen this or something similiar when fowl were vaccinated by someone that didn't know what they were doing. If you do the Coryza shot too high on the neck sometimes you will get a knot like this.

hmmm...i never thought about the vaccination possibility. Just never have seen anything like it before

Type is of the utmost importance, BUT , a DQ is a DQ! They are there in the SOPs for a reason. One is not any less of a DQ than another, they are DISQUALIFYING FAULTS! A Squirrel tail is no less of a DQ than a side sprig. The reasons being if they are bred forward, it will make it just that much harder for the population to breed out! When people show and win with obvious DQs, the problem expands and continues, hence the problems we are having with this breed now. Not that this is the only breed with problems, but in it's infancy in this country, we sure aren't doing the Marans any justice by making light of age old DQs and letting people win and pass them on. JMO

X2 I think my point is misunderstood.
DQ is the first out the door . . or to the freezer! BUT not all comb issues and feathering on feet is a DQ. Type is far more important than number of points on a comb, or if some of the feathering color is incorrect.

Time to leave again.

PS. Thanks Math Ace--a super effort on your part to share and a super opportunity to learn.

Hi Kim, Looks like the male either has sprigs or even Carnation. It appears to have multiple points where the blade should be . Let me see if I can dig the magnifying light out and use it.

Dang, I always wondered how you spotted all those faults. I pictured your computer set up was hooked up to a monitor with a 42" screen or something...

Thanks Lisa for posting all those photos and keeping us in the loop on Newnan. I really do hope that it becomes a habit, where people take photos of shows they go to and post Marans here for us to see, since we can't be at every show.

mornin Kim! were you hatchin this weekend again? or was it that you just put in more eggs? its hard to keep up sometimes

No hatches this weekend, next week around the 12th /13th. I have lots more eggs to set this week when my Wellie eggs show up from my dear friend Happy Chooks. I have 3 dozen Marans eggs right now, plus what they give me whilst I am waiting this week and I have 18 Barnevelder too....thinking I will have a full tray.

Thank you! I thought I saw something but I can't make details out clearly. Did you see the sprig on the Black Copper male with the nice comb? It was one of the first photos that Lisa posted. Nice comb but man o man the sprig!

Ah...next weekend...I was a wee bit off! I just can't wait to see what you get out of those beautiful eggs you've been collecting. I'm starting to work on hopefully what is my last run through the pens for culling. I moved a few yesterday and ran out of time, so its gonna be more moving and sorting again today.
Its been such a wet winter than its gonna take a while I believe to get it to dry out and then I should be onto getting the ground leveled and raised a bit where I'll be building, then it will be building time and a half. I'm gonna go in sections I think so I can start using the pens as I go. Otherwise Its gonna be a special year
