Hi Kim, Looks like the male either has sprigs or even Carnation. It appears to have multiple points where the blade should be . Let me see if I can dig the magnifying light out and use it.

Kim and Lisa, the Comb faults are still there with the light. I have the large adjustable magnifying light that I use in my Antique Glass business. I have seen most of these DQ and faults we are seeing show up now in other breeds. I never seen the Carnation Comb before I got into the Marans. A person I know alerted me to the Carnation about five year ago.

After seeing the Blue female that was second place the 1st place female must of really been something else. One of the better type female I have seen.

haha...that's what I was thinking too about the 1st place blue hen after seeing the 2nd place. I was hoping maybe Lisa had pics of the 1st place one hiding somewhere.

I'm sorting and moving, too!

Checking everyone over with a fine tooth comb...and trying to train my eye...

All the extra or questionable girls are going to the layer house

all the extra boys, to a freezer pad to wait for a warmer day to put them in the freezer!


Going to try to combine my young keeper Marans girls with the established hens...we'll see how that goes...


Had a big BCM hatch and then a blue, I think - I increased the humidity on recommendation b/c one of the cochins got stuck and I think that was the WRONG thing to do!!

This poor kid was soooo goopy and sticky - it's like he had super glue on him.
He's all clumpy and icky - working on it bit by bit...

SOMETIMES I just want to do a little party dance when you make some of these comments. Let me tell you the story here. . . .

I seem to have a lot of the pics of #2 blue marans, but none of #1. I meant to get some of #1 BUT something happened IDK... I tried to contact the judge via email a day or two after the show BECAUSE I really liked #2 a lot and wanted to know what was the deciding factor between the two.

I will tell you that I am pretty sure that #1 and #2 were both from the same breeder . Therefore, there wasn't any favoritism on my part or the judge... Dang, I wish I could find the photos of #1...

Just for Grins... I will see if I can get hold of the breeder and see if he got any feed back...

how much did you increase the humidity? Did you have to open the bator to increase it?

yeah, sorting here today, but on paper first otherwise I don't stay as focused as I need to. I keep notes on birds and if I go by those notes it takes me 1/2 the time to move and sort.

I've got those pics of boys to look through you sent me....I like one better than all the others so far. I just am trying to remember what other roos you have around besides the ones you sent me pics of last night.

X2 I think my point is misunderstood.
DQ is the first out the door . . or to the freezer! BUT not all comb issues and feathering on feet is a DQ. Type is far more important than number of points on a comb, or if some of the feathering color is incorrect.

Arielle, Let me try and explain some of this to you. It does not take a show bird to produce a top show bird. With Parti-colored fowl they very seldom reproduce themselves. I grant you that type is important and I take it as a given that we must have type. But we can not wait on the type before we cull out the genetics that will reproduce themselves. If we only work on one thing at a time we will never produce a SOP bird. If we do not cull for the faults and DQ's as we go along we will never get to the point we need to be at.

Lisa, Did you try one of the Marans' clubs breeder's directories? Maybe he is in there?? That sure was a lovely hen!
