I wondering that too. Despite the fact that BCMs are based on ER, I haven't heard of anyone talking about brown heads or head spots on the chicks so I'm curious to hear how yours feathers out. I'm assuming typical BCM chicks are effected by other genes, modifiers, or inhibitors that may or may not be present? Perhaps someone else that has had brown headed BCMs will comment? I bet VillageChicken knows!!!!

I wonder if you will get more brown heads????

Or if you even want more brown heads ... !

hmmm...hopefully someone will pop by that has some info on it. I haven't seen VC around in a while tho.... I am not sure if I will get more or not, I don't know if it would bother me to get more....I will probably be able to decide when she feathers in some more and I see what kind of coppering appears. haha. I do have to say, so far there's not a wild overcoloring on her

One of my first black copper marans that I hatched had a brown spot on his head near his eye. He turned out to be way overly copper on his chest. The brown spot disappeared and his head looked normal but he got a ton of coppering on his chest. I have heard people say that when they are born with these brown patches it could mean they will have too much coppering. It will be interesting to see how your boy turns out. I am not on my own computer right now but can post a pic of that bcm chick when I get on my own 'puter. He did come from an uber dark egg though (of course lol). Needless to say I couldn't use him for breeding.

Just a short note on the Brown spot on the BC Marans. The last 400 chicks I hatched last year and showed pictures on here had the brown around the head. The female ended up Mossy and the males were over brown breasted and all were sent to the vietnamese for food. Don

I guess that brown spot means they are missing some sort of melanizing gene.

thanks for chimin in Don. I wondered if it might mean more coppering as they mature. I'll keep an eye on her and see what she looks like as she develops.

Oh...and I forgot to ask Spitman....where did your birchens come from? They have nice leg feathering from what I could see!
From a local chicken farmer. Marie Krebs , she has the best marans around she wins every year at the Berrien county fair , and she dose very well at the state shows as well.
