Debbi -- I am TOTALLY counting on you to fill my hatching needs since the Silkies seem to be TOTALLY escaping me! And I KNOW you have a new camera so pictures are fully expected as well.

Vicki... you inspired me.... I have to make those dividers with the canvas like yours. I have so many babies that I have to know what, and who they are and I don't have that many trays or room for them. Got the hatcher running yesterday. Converted it over to the digital thermostat and used a smaller fan. Had to check and make sure the temps were consistant with all the baskets. Seemed to be working fine. I have another fan on standby if needed. Humidity was easily up to 65%. So I think I am good. Now to just get everything organized today and load them in.... then must finish the giant brooder boxes...

The BIG batch will be only three days behind. I hope those Marans hatch well.... I need to work on my flock. I need more good birds to breed.

Fantastic! You won't regret them, especially since you lose hardly any room in the hatching tray at all and they still allow for airflow and fold down flat when not in use. And bonus...when you need to clean them you can just toss them in a tray of soapy water to sanitize them, easy peasy!

Good luck on your hatch Donna!

That was a task putting all those eggs in baskets to keep them separate. I tossed a few more that quit. I think I may have had 12 blue cuckoos that was a surprise. Apparently since my eggs were getting old and the bator was filling up fast, I opted to just set my original pullets darkest eggs.... thought I set them all. That will help for the new fall layers. I also set eggs from Becky's pullets, needed some new blood maybe... we will see. Thermostat was holding steady and the humidity was good too. and the madness starts in 3 days

They were easy to adapt to they baskets. Hubby worked for the phone company and has miles of that phone wire (got them before the price of copper spiked about 20 years ago) so I just cut it and wired it to the basket. I will keep them in the baskets. I got plenty so I could do that. I will just spray them with oxine when needed. AND as an added bonus... Hobby Lobby had them on sale for 30% off. CHEAP stuff. $.59 AND 30% OFF something like $.41 a sheet? right? And I got it in basket coordinating colors too

Awesome! You'll have to post some pics of your set up. I'd love to see it!

My set up in my hatcher just SUCKS.... I can't really see what is going on.... I tried to stair step them so I could see SOME in each tray. There are 9 baskets in there and only 3 are without dividers. I put the regular breeds on the bottom, like Leghorns and RIR. I important ones to me are on the second and third row. I may have to get pics after they hatch... May not be able to see in the pic what is going on.

Okay - so if I'm understanding what Kim and Don are saying about feathered legs:

Even though there was a previous discussion (or two!) relating that outside toe feathers and middle toe feathers are two different genes - feathering on the OUTSIDE toe that is TOO heavy can still infringe on the middle toe. - ?? -

Just trying to understand and keep my notes straight!
Thanks!
