I grew onions for the FIRST time this fall.

I am so excited!

They were so EASY to grow.

I can't wait to harvest them. I am starting to see a few of them developing nice size bulbs.....
Tomatoes seedlings are in the ground along with 7 different pepper varieties. Can you say SALSA ? ??

i suppose you can get them to grow down there in the winter eh? That's great they are doing so well....I think they are probably one of the easiest plants to grow and there really is nothing like an onion straight from the garden! I can't believe you have tomatoes and peppers in the ground already. Around here most of us wait til the end of April to mid May to plant...some wait longer...to get past the frost. I'm determined before I go to work today to get lots done in the garden tho! Still have tons of other stuff I can plant in the meantime!

Vicki ~ Glad the tornadoes skipped over you! We are due for storms here this weekend, but they've been saying it for the last few days too, and nothing. Sunday is supposed to get up to 90! Yeah on the onions! I'm going to attack those danged weeds today in the garden spot, then if I have any energy left, will till...

Ok, it only took me half an hour to upload this one pic, you should see the other 5 eggs!! There is one in there that makes these look like mediums! Can you say, OOOOWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!????

Oxine.... I order from Rivival they are the cheapest. $25 + shipping for 1 gal but it is cheaper to just order 4. The price is $20 each and shipping is about the same with 4 gal. I ordered 4 gal back in the summer last year and I am just now running out. I use it in the drinking water to keep it clean since I use a 55 gal drum to water in one set of pens.


The clipped wing thing.... I think it is a DQ. I bought some Nice Ameraucanas and I asked the lady if she showed them, she told me she clipped their wings and couldn't. She did show chickens that was why I asked and the roos is the best boy I have next to the splash Cuckoo I got from Becky.

Don't remember who was talking about that noxious weed....but it is called Knotweed or Knottweed...not sure of the spelling, but it is a horrible weed. Very invasive and a dropped leaf will start another plant. It will also turn into a tree if someone is not careful.....some folks down in Portland obviously do not know what it is and I seem them manicured in folks yards like a tree. My parents neighbor has pruned himself a not so lovely 20 ft tall Knotweed tree as well, yay.
It must be poisoned as natural methods do not work. It usually is best to be sprayed in late August early September, just as it is in bloom, but I have treated it 2 times during the year and found good results. However, if one doesn't catch every stupid leaf from it another plant will pop up 2 feet away. It will take a couple years to erradicate it from ones property. Here in my county if it is sighted on your property the county fines you a nice hefty fine and mandates erradication by use of chemicals. Once you have sprayed it and removed it from your property the county will reimburse us for half of the cost of the chemicals used to kill it. I dig up the root system of them as well and I burn every part of them I can find. This year they are coming back with a vengence.
If they grow in pastures cattle will mow them down before they bloom as cattle love Knotweed but mowing them down does not help too much as they will not bloom and broadcast pollen or seed, but they will come back in the same place the following year and a much much bigger specimen.
Oh how I love thee Knotweed.

Kim, Hmm, never heard of it before, and I've never had them until about 2 years ago. The pollen and seeds probably got brought out here by my neighbor hauling in round bales to the cattle, and he insists on feeding them right behind my yard. I have yet to see one get 20', these usually get about 5', and with this warm weather, they already have flower buds on them! I tried Round Up on them last year, and they just laughed at it! What all do you guys use out there? I really hate adding chemicals to my garden spot, it kind of tends to defeat the purpose of organic produce...

huh...i never knew it had another name....round here they call it dock weed and it is just as bad as you describe...I hate it...it gets spread whenever harvest happens and the dried seed heads get flung in the air and all those seeds go flying. Its a neverending battle it seems. Only we don't get reimbursed for nothing haha

Debbi~ I'm not sure how it got here but it is horrible. The 5' plants is about normal but they will get much bigger. The 20' er's happen when someone lets one stalk of it continue to grow instead of letting it grow in a bush form which it is does naturally. If let go until August or Sept. a person can see very tall huge bushes of this crap.
I know folks that use Caseron (spelling?) or Crossbow, don't know how the Caseron works. I hate the thought of using the chemicals.
I only used chemicals on them once and now I dig them up the old fashioned way with a shovel after I have hosed the tops of the plants and it's leaves with Vinegar for about a week, before they get to big and I burn them, being careful to get every stupid leaf and portion of root or whatever falls from the plant.
I also just found about 15 new starts in one of my gardens. I will be a digging fool this year...I have noticed them in several places through the yard and in the garden. Funny thing is.....we didn't have them here on our property until we brought home lawn clippings and rakings from a friend of ours' house. The first Knotweed plant we got grew exactly where I dumped those clippings.
