Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Made it through the first wave of the worst storms....still have more cells coming through, but seeing clear skies to the west for the first time all day finally.

Good to hear! We finally got some sun and wind. The air is very "juicy" though, so I can see some stuff developing tonight; maybe not the big stuff but enough to set me off! Early tomorrow morning will be the real stuff. Just went out to batten the hatches down as much as I can with the chickens. Stay safe, and PRAY!

I'm glad you're making it alright so far....I hope it stays that way for all of us! I've been prayin all day....work was a zoo with everyone buying emergency supplies, so I'm wiped out!

I would love to get some Blue Copper Marans. I don't even care if they are culls. I mainly want a few roosters. If you decide to get rid of any more, let me know
I'm not sure who you were talking to, but to ship culls seems a tad extravagent? I'm in Missouri, so for one bird, you are looking at about $70.00!

I'm sure there are plenty of culls out in CA just ripe for the picking! Check your local Craig's List, or e-mail some members of the Marans' clubs.

I just want to know WHY this weather has to come with the bators going, and chicks in the brooder??? Just kidding, I really wonder why it has to come at all? What all has hatched for you so far??

No kidding! Sometimes I think I'm crazy for doing an hatching in the spring with this weather! I shut the hatcher off and have the last one hanging out in the pocket of my sweatshirt at the moment....not quite as quick as the other chicks, and was getting run over.... but as far as tallies...I don't have each color recorded...I planned on doing that after dinner, but out of 75 eggs ended up with 64 chicks...8 of the 11 that didn't hatch were ones that didn't develop all the way and just couldn't see cause it they were too dark. Then I had 3 chicks that stopped part way through hatching....two of them were upside down in the shell...so overall I think this hatch went fantastically!

Awesome hatch!! Congrats!!

My Showgirl eggs got hung up in that dad-gummed Kansas City hub! Won't get them now, till hopefully, Monday!

I knew that would happen! The gal shipped on Tuesday from MI to MO, and it takes now 4-6 days for Priority mail?? BS! If anyone has to ship to Kansas or Missouri and they are routed through the KC, KS hub, good luck! Plan on 4-7 days for your parcel to be delivered! They were slow to begin with, but now since the PO has closed some smaller hubs, KC can't do the job up to snuff. Just saying...

It feels like a whole lot of things are just going to pot anymore....it makes me crazy if I get to thinking about it too much. Eventually things will have to give...good or bad. I really hope you get the eggs on monday!
I do think I might finally have gotten into the rhythm of the right settings and practices for my hatches. The first two of the year were the best by far I've ever had with the marans! I'll try to get some more pics of them soon...maybe tonight after I've done some tallying of their id colors and etc. I did post some of the blue cuckoos I got from this batch a couple of pages back tho

Yes, seems the less product that goes into something, the more you have to pay for it?? Like that Pink Slime thing with meat; no slime, higher price! Want to be excluded from the phone book, more money! I guess the saying, "less is more", now applies to lots of things, and not in the original content! LOL! Stuff that got delivered in 3 days, now costs more, and takes 4-6 days! Go figure. I've been saving back some more Silkie eggs and a few of the darkest BCM eggs to throw in there with the SG eggs. A couple of the BCMs are the new layers, but the color is now starting to come on a bit, and they are much rounder than the ones my girls lay, so who knows what I may get?? Will be culling hard and quick this go around! Got one clean shanked 4+ week old cockerel that can go now. I'm not fooling around with the cleaned legged ones any more!

sounds like you'll have lots of eggs to go in the incubator when you finally get those other ones!
