Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My BBS Marans are bigger now. Can you help me reassess whether these are hens roos? Thanks!!

I have three 8 week old splashes that look just like this:

I also have two blues #1 and #2 that are 8 weeks old:

Here are the five 8 week olds together:

Lastly, I have two 5 week olds one black and one splash. Is it too early to tell gender on these?

Hi!
frow.gif
I'm new to this forum, and would like some guidance. I've recently acquired BCM chicks from two different sources. This is a completely new breed to me. I attempted to access the blackcoppermarans.org website to get more information, but it was blocked by my virus protection as a contamianted site. Could someone please recommend other sites with valid information so that I can research this breed?

I've noticed that I have both feathered shanks and clean legs in both groups. As they grow, I'll be choosing which to keep and which to cull, so aside from shank feathering I'm hunting other desirable/undesirable traits. These are not show quality birds from either source, but there's no sense in breeding any but the best of them I don't think. The rest can either be sold as dark egg layers or just used as egg layers here. I've got 24 straight run chicks out there, one batch being nearly three weeks older than the second. I should be able to pick and choose...if I know what to base my pickiness on!

Thanks for your help!

And welcome to the thread! When you get a few hours (or days) read thru the thread and catch up!
We can get a little chatty about other things, but we think we have the best thread here!

Thanks!

I have been reading bits on the thread for several days, as time allows. It'll take me a while to get through it all! The breed is fascinating, and I'm enjoying learning about them. I'll head off to your recommended site now, and see what I can learn! Meg

Lark Rise,

The 8 week splash all look like pullets to me.

Your blues look like they are correctly labeled.

Your 5 week old are a little harder, but the dark one appears to be a cockerel and the other could well be a pullet.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Calling all Canadian Marans folks that may be lurking on this thread!! The 2012 APA Canadian National is being held in Woodstock, Ontario at the end of October this year. I am hoping to work with the Marans Chicken Club in the USA to organize an egg show at that show. It would REALLY help if I had a few people in addition to myself that might think about entering eggs. I would LOVE to hear from you. (American entries would be welcome as well but paperwork is required to get the eggs/birds into Canada. The APA has provided information here ... http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/bordercrossing.htm )

There is tremendous interest in my local area now in Marans simply because a few folks have seen my eggs. They had more than a few long term poultry guys oooo-ing and awww-ing! And not just the colour either. The guys were commenting on size and shape as well. It would be great to get even more people interested and working with Marans in Canada!!

Debbi ~ my 15 week old BCM girl is being bred by a 15 week BCM boy. Go figure. I've been free ranging them everyday and don't have their breeding pens ready yet. My son keeps begging me to keep them locked up one day so that we can see if there are indeed any eggs, but we have been having REALLY warm weather, and I'm not set up for it.... arrrgh. There's some motivation for me.
