Rudimentary toe~

It is not listed as a DQ or a fault in the standard and is something that happens in heavily feather shanked birds and birds with feathered feet/toes. I find it can be somewhat avoided by not using the birds that show it for breeding....but like the feather stub arbitrarily showing up on the middle toe, this too can show up even if a person does not use birds that express it.

I agree with Barngoddess and it should not cause issues with walking.....I have had several upon several rudimentary toes and they have never had an issue with walking.

I'm sorry that I'm a nube but I have read about a term on here referring to mossy, but can't find what it means. Also since I have 10 BCM's in need to understand what needs to be culled. Or when buying chicks or chickens what is standard in this line. I'm assuming SOP is a reference? thanks
Mossy is when you see brownish stipling coming on on the body of the bird. BCM's will/should only show any color upon maturity in the hackle/neck area of the females and on the hackle, wing bow and saddles of the males and it will be copper not brown, the rest of the body of the BCM should be a nice black. Will see if I can dig up a photo of one of my mossy chicks.

I seem to remember something about "will not be penalized for feathers on middle toe"......"Langshans....."
So I try not to get too crazy about it, since Langshan was used to make Marans.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Galen: I posted a picture of mossy traits at the beginning of the Black Copper thread... I believe they might still be there

Pink: Amen to the Comb thing!!! I would take lots of other faults first...maybe all... I think I would take a one legged bird first!!!

Here's what it says in the APA SOP, pg. 31 under Breed Shape,

Shanks and Toes

(a) All Breeds Fowl

1. Crooked toe -- each toe. . . . . . . . . . . . 1/2 to 2 *these are the points that can be deducted*
2. Horny, well defined spurs in females . . . . . .1/2
3. Missing toe nail . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1
4. Missing part of toe, each toe . . . . . . . . . . . .1
NOTE: Feather leg breeds are not to be penalized for a rudimentary outer toe.

(b) All Breeds Chickens, except Sumatras
1. Extra spur-- each extra. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1/2

(c) Langshans, Faverolles
1. Feathered middle toe -- each . . . . . . . . . . . 1/2 to 1 &1/2

Hope this helps.
