Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

on the marans sop it is listed as a fault

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/517113/marans-sop-discussion-thread

We just skimmed over it the other day as to whether or not to cull for in chicks since it is a fault and not a dq. I am culling for it. I think after a week or so they are losing it so I am sticking with my tags at hatch. Better safe than sorry.

Wow, I would've assumed a DQ. Good to know. Not had that problem yet...would have to weigh the pros and cons according to the other qualities of the bird. But if I remember correctly, those that have had it said it passes on fairly easily, so if I were to use such a bird, I would test mate first. Does anyone know if it only shows on the males, or do females show the middle toe feathering too?? Seems to me, I've only seen male examples??

I'm so glad you are back for a bit!! I know I missed you and think that others have too! I have eggs going to lockdown in the hatcher tomorrow and should hatch Saturday while I'm gone at the spring poultry show! How did the Wheatens end up hatching?

Ok, quick questions - where would I find pictures to see the "difference" between blue copper/blue wheaten/ blue birchen marans. I'm reading some conflicting info on other sites and give up trying to post a pic of my rooster. If you can direct me to a page or thread I'd love it.

Want to replace my roo (just a backyard fun flock) but he over blue hens seems to give me mostly just blue (and love it). That didn't seem to follow the genetics plan so assuming luck. Looking forward to direction as surfing for info not helping, nor is the darn computer up for posting pics tonight to just ask about my roo. I was told he is a blue copper marans.

Hi all, I'm 1000 posts behind thanks to the Easter Hatchathon and now the TUrkey hatchathon.

I'm having trouble determining the large end of the marans eggs. Any tricks to determining the large end on what looks like golfball??

I have set them on their sides hoping the aircell will become visible by day 5.
