Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just wondering..are those White chicks from a White x White breeding, or are those some of those so-called "Double Mutant Whites" that come from Black Coppers?? Makes me wonder if there could be a lethal factor there somewhere?

Double mutant is such a funny term

recessive white does take each parent to have a copy of it and having one copy doesn't show on the bird like getting a child with blue eyes from 2 parents having brown....really not different than having wheatens show up either. That's not to say we couldn't have a lethal gene in any of our flocks and matched up you get birds that die....If I was set on having white marans with the darkest eggs I sure would breed to a dark egg gene black copper and work that dark egg into my flock breeding them just like "splits" Kinda like white silkies you never know what's lurking in their background either

Sorry to change the topic, but I have a genetic question for you pros out there

I am confused with one of my hens. I have a light blue marans with blue leakage (see picture) Would she be considered splash or blue according to the genetic breeding chart? If I breed her with a black will I get 100% blue? I love her color far more then the regular blue splash that I have that are mainly white. Thoughts please

I would consider her Splash.

x 2 ... splash

She looks young. You may find her white gets whiter as she ages.

If you breed her with black you should get 100% blue.

*gasps* she might turn white??? I never thought of that! lol ohhhh I sure hope she stays this color. She is beautiful..... I call her Pearl (I know, I know.....)

and she is still young, only 7.5 weeks old now. Thank you for your input though. I greatly appreciate it. Blues are what I want......

Blues are my passion as well. I have an Ameraucana splash that looked VERY much like your girl at the same age. Her light bits got lighter as she aged but her blue and black dashes stayed. She is quite stunning as a hen. Very interesting feathers, quite frankly. I am just about to stick her in with a blue boy to see what develops ....

that will be my next choice.... which cockerel to keep. We have a blue splash with light feathering on the legs (blah lol) and a black birchen who has alot of feathering on the legs. Also, we are waiting on some hatching eggs that will be blue and black coppers- and we are bound to have cockerels in that bunch. This young lady is sister to a solid black and solid blue marans (see pictures- barely feathered legs if any) We also have two blue splash pullets (one feathered, one not). I am not too fond of the birchen boy, but he is pretty dark and when bred to the solid blue and black, they may throw fairly solid babies with feathered legs- right?? lol I know- I have TONS to learn and the way to do it is to wait for them to grow up and test it all out. I just want some beautiful- quality birds and hope they lay a dark egg lol

I'm gonna go ahead and say keep the birchen! Not that I'm biased or anything

That birchen has nice silver coming in so far....if he keeps getting more of that nice silver, you should have a nice bird. The silver can take a bit more time to come in than other colors. If you don't like him, you could pack him a sack lunch and send him my way!
