Pink - can't wait to see what your Barnie X girl produces - she's so pretty!

I have a Marans x BLRW girl who is @ 2mths old and I can't WAIT to see what her egg will look like!
right now, she's just starting to feather in and she has BLUE LACED RED LEG FEATHERS!! So neat!!




Marcy - all my OE have pea combs.
I'm pretty good at feather sexing from days 1-5 - other than that, I have to wait and see on those pea combs.
I wish they were easy to sex, like straight combs!

I found an ad on Craigslist for someone who is taking orders for pullets that will be ready a couple months.

It's for black copper marans. I don't know much about marans, I'll admit that - I'm new to the breed but I'm intrigued by their beautiful eggs and reputation for being hardy.

I guess what concerns me - what my questions for you marans experts are is - this isn't the breeder when I spoke to her. She's getting them and then raising them from chicks which is fine by me but from what I was reading is that what defines the marans as a breed is the ability to lay the dark chocolate egg and without knowing the breeding stock is producing that I don't know it's truly a marans...will I?

So, if I bought one and picked it up as a pullet around 6-8w of age would their be any way for me to know that it is even a marans for sure (especially since I've never seen a marans in person and am a total newbie to the breed), would know for sure that it's a pullet (I'm not a newbie to chickens but am getting back in...this I might be able to but...might not), etc.

I just worry I'm going to get scammed...

U are the costumer and the costumer is all-ways right... i don't think it is to much to ask for pic,s of the parents and more info maybe you can talk to the breeder yourself... the person selling should already have all that... and if your still uncomfortable with it then don't buy...

Perry, that is one of the reasons that there is a thread like this.
Beware, there are alot of people looking to make a lot of money off of this beautiful breed.
Another reason I have been on this thread.
Good luck, I hope you get nice birds. But don't count on it.....

You never know for sure until the pullet begins to lay just what color her eggs will be...you can ask about the breeder and perhaps these are coming from a hatchery they are selling them now also. Look at the pictures on this thread and you are buying what the person selling doesn't want so it's up to you if the price isn't way high and they don't look like mixed up breeds try a couple and hang out with us on all the Marans threads and keep learning. I didn't start with "perfect" birds but have culled and have nice enough ones to work with. I sell chicks now that sure look better than most I hatched when I started and have good enough egg color to have fun in the egg contests...still not "perfect" and I still cull for egg color and type and plenty of people have bought pullets from me that love their eggs you have to start someplace if the ones you are thinking about aren't good enough keep looking you'll find some.

I can't believe it! I have a paint silkie egg that just pipped. Its only day 19. They are supposed to hatch on Thursday. I triple checked my bator temp and it isn't running high.

He is in a hurry...must be a little roo.

My first batch of Silkies did that too. Late in the 19th day I had all kinds of pips, they hatched the next day, then the other half of the clutch started to pip, and hatched on day 20, and a couple of stagglers went onto day 21. My Marans have always been stragglers, and I usually don't even get pips until day 21, then they can take up to 4 days to all hatch. All, as in my biggest hatch of FIVE!!

Can't wait to see the spots before my eyes, you must show pics when he gets here!!

X 2! Ask her if it's possible to see some of the egg shells these chicks hatch from. That will give you an idea of the kind of color the pullets may lay. That is of course inless the "breeder" bred the hens to a roo with lesser egg color. When you get the chicks, take some pics and post them here, we may all be able to help you. Welcome to the "Dark Side"...of eggs that is!

ETA: Ok, cancel that, I just re-read she is getting them as chicks. Ask her where/who the breeder is. If they are from a hatchery, the egg color may not be the best..

Ok all you gardening pros; do any of you use a "Potato Box or Tower" to grow your taters in?? My friend just told me about this the other night, and it sounds like the way to go! Then I read online, that this method doesn't do so well with the Yukon Golds, my favorites. Anyone ever try this??

I use a "ring" of tires I stack the tires to look like that old Michelin Tire guy plant them and keep adding compost 3 tires high is all I do but they are pick up truck tires so big I do it to keep those hungry gophers out because I have wire in the bottom tire they grow great and I have Yukon's in one

Now all 3 of the paints have pips. One has started zipping. One pipped his egg upside down -the ding dong. None of the lavs have pipped yet. A silkie egg that I put in from my own silkies has a pip and the one orpington x marans cross is out running around jumping on the paint eggs trying to encourage them to come out and play. He is huge I cannot believe he fit in that little pullet egg lol. I don't know for certain, but have read, that paints don't always breed true...that they can be black, white, or paint spotted...do you know if that is true? I can't see any fuzz color yet just teeny tiny beaks lol.
