Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm there but having tons of issues with BYC. Glad your dad's surgery went well. Love the copper on that cockerel that you posted.
grrrr...I hope BYC behaves for you soon! Its been fun this year pairing up birds I think will give me the copper I want. Learning a lot and hopeful that I'm on the right track!

Vicki~

BYC keeps logging me out everytime I try to post or if I scroll back a page, then it doesn't want to let me log back in after that. works when it wants to.

Hello everyone! I'm new here and have a couple questions...

So I finally found two Marans chicks!

Yayyy! But the store I got them from didn't know what kind they were, just that they were Marans. I've heard that only the black copper Marans will lay the dark chocolate eggs, is that true??? I was originally looking for the black copper but I couldn't resist when I saw these babies. Any ideas on their coloring??? I know its early and hard to tell. I'm so excited to find out though lol.

These are the same chick. The back is pretty dark but the undersides are lighter.

This is the other one.

And the two together. (Sorry for the bad pics)

Any help would be great!!!

I'm still building stock. THese are boys from other lines. A Bev davis/grisham line and a jean wade line. 4 roosters from a whole lot of eggs !! 2 from each source. SO I'm looking at who to put on the hens for the rest of the summer and hatch a few chicks. I suppose with 5 hens I could use 2-3 roosters!

ANyone use the toe punch method?? I hate legbands aka cable ties fallign off, or bitten off! All my marans roosters have removed theirs! Naughty boys, why can't they be good like the other boys!

If you mean 2-3 roosters at a time with 5 hens, the poor dears won't have any feathers left. I assume you mean in seperate pens and rotating the roos? I don't know if it's just my birds or what, but the cross of Davis/Jeane lines has popped up all kinds of problems for me. If you have a pure Wade Jeane line, I would keep it that way, and work from there with them. Same with the Davis.

As for the toe punch method, I had thought about it too, but with my poor eye sight, I don't think it would work for me. When I first started, I used those spiral rings, NEVER AGAIN! Then I went on to the Bandettes, they all either cracked and fell off, or the chooks took them off, I found them all over the run! Right now, I have so few birds left, I know them all by sight, so no biggy. When I do start banding again, it will either be with metal bands or wing tags. Like Vicki said, the toe punch method can grow back, just like with pierced ears, unless you make a big enough hole or slit. I like to be able to look and right away tell who is who by tags or bands. I wish they sold the tags and wing bands in smaller quantities and in different colors. That would be ideal for me, and I'm quite sure for others as well.

The loght colored one is an EE with the big cheeks and I would guess the other is too. Do either one have feathered legs and what color are the legs? I don't know of any color of Marans that come chipmunk except some very rare ones.
