Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

OK now where would be the best place to acquire the SOP on its most recent publication?

With genetics and traits being brought up it again refreshes out question on which direction each line is directed and the differences between the two lines that make each a distinguishable from the other as to better define the direction we would take with each as an individual?

OK Mary asks how are they different and why, "she said I was to technicle

you can never be too technical when it comes to chicken genetics!
I don't know how they are different. The WHY is a little easier: Each breeder is at a different spot in their breeding program. One might be focusing on egg color and comb quality. Maybe the other is concentrating on body type. But wherever they are in the process, it's safe to assume that they're both breeding toward the SOP definition.

I bet if you call or email the breeders, they'll be glad to tell you where their focus is, and what the strengths & weaknesses of their lines are. Chicken peoples always LOVE to talk about chickens!

OK can we get a link to the Marans Chicken Club USA if it is not too much to ask please

The club site is www.marans.org.

Another thing you should be doing before making breeding decisions - get out to the shows, hopefully, bigger shows with the "bigger" breeders in attendance. Find the birds you like the look of and talk to those breeders. That can help you make decisions about priorities and the direction you want to go with your birds.

SOP is available from the APA web site -- www.amerpoultryassn.com. (Marans standard is not in that book yet. You have to visit the club site, I believe, to get the Marans standard.)

She had 2 breeds she wanted to actually breed to a standard her 1st choise is the Black and Copper her 2nd is White Face Black Spanish, Her other birds she has now are just layers and pets for the grand kids
Being we have found more good info on the Black and Copper as well as lines that are bred to perpetuate the standard with the Marans these are what she decided on.
Me I am kind of the hmm how you say messenger LOL but I am learnign more every day!

Mary had talked to Bev Davis on the phone and it seems she dose not live far from us, this is another reason for her to decide on the Marans I am convinced I will come home some Friday after work and Mary will be telling me we are off so see Bev and her birds LOL

Quote: Horses don't ususlly need as much grain as most people like to feed. More hay is better for sure. In Holland, they feed silage to the horses too, just not customary here in the US. Have you ever looked into it?? Good microbes in that there silage.

Pip was giving me fits in the run last night while I was watering, so I decided he needed a pick-up, a talking to, and while I'm at it, an inspection. That always seems to calm him down for a bit, so I snagged him. Checked his wings again, and now he has two cinnomon colored primaries, one on each wing. Just the bottom edge of the feathers are cinnamon colored. He had some white feathers come into his wings too, but since I wormed them all with the Eprinex, everyone of them is dropping white feathers all over the place! Hopefully, they will all get black feathers back in place. Pip also has new feather growth coming in on his shanks and toes! Ain't no Canadian dew down here, WTH??

Either he is a cross between a BCM and Wheaten, or he is a very late to mature Wheaten boy. He sure does resemble a Wheaten much more than a BCM! He is kind of in a semi molt right now, I've yet to see any of my roos go into an all over molt yet, just dribs and drabs. Maybe the Eprinex did the trick, and they will all straighten their feathers out! I'll have to get a pic of Pip when the weather cools a bit. I'm kind of excited about those cinnamon feathers!

I feed as much hay as they'll eat! (and they have round bales in turnout)
I do the ration balancer, so that I don't have to feed the traditional "grain" though I do feed grain as in oats.

Nope - never tried silage, though my DSD's old QH does just fine on it whilst turned out with the cows! (He's happier with the cows, beats on the horses...)

I'd be afraid to try....but could look into it!
