Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Whoa! I was way out of the loop on that critique! I still like him better than the previous one. That 37 bird is roachy, plus he will have the two tone hackles, both things that irk me right off the bat. So, I need to slow down and look deeper it seems. As for the wings and the comb, young bird, hot weather. I have droopy wings and combs here with this weather too, and I know they aren't that way when cooler. He does need filling out, especially in the chest/belly area, but I think it will come. I still would not toss this guy yet. In fact, strap on his napsack and send him pointing east, I'd take him.

Don, that comb ending thing did not come across very clear the second time either. Do you mean the end of the blade should be in line with the back edge of the eye? I would love to see some pics of that, I don't think I've ever seen one, at least that I can recall?

Quote: I don't usually comment, but I just wanted to make note, he has white in his ear lobes... if you have something better I would not use him......

This is a great education for us newbies.

I have a silver spangled hamburg and he has bright white enamel. I don't see that in this bird. I was under the impression from previous discussions that there is a white that is allowed. I don't have the APA book , I think that is where the info is found rather than the SOP. Is someone willing to look it up ? TY Worth discussing again. DOes the book actually have any real photos?

Edit--I think Don covered this well enough.

Do you have a picture that demonstrates that? I can't seem to picture what you mean and the combs on mine all look like they extend down over the nostrils. Thanks.
Marcy, I believe he means the end of the comb, as in the blade, should stop at the rear end of the eye. I can't be sure, but that is what I surmise. I've not seen any of those either that I can recall. The comb also should be standing off the neck, as in nowhere near the neck standing free.

Here is my Wheaten chick, I'm guessing is a pullet, one day shy of 3 weeks old. "Wheatie-Pie" is her brooder name. Look at those street sweepers!

Thanks Donna. She is cute and so is her personality. Wheatie-Pie was the first thing that came to mind when I saw her, she is a sweetie-pie! I can hear Don's eyeballs clanking in the back of his head again with that name! Sorry Don...
