Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nope, don't think so. This one is from Randy, and he doesn't do the Blue Wheatens. Seeing as how there is no black where there should be at this age for a roo, I'm holding out for a pullet!

If no blue, then you're right - a pullet! Sweet!

I just had 7 BCM hatch and one of them has a bum foot/leg. Anyone have any idea if there is anything that can be done or is this one to be culled? When it stands up it looks normal and can walk around just as well as the others, but upon laying down, the leg splays out sideways and the toes go together.

If it is kind of doing a "split" you can do one of several things:

I take a hair tie and make two slip knots (looks like hobbles, if you're a horse person!)
Put one foot in each loop- it sort of guides the legs together and won't let them continue to splay, until the muscles build up.
Takes 3-5ish days

I've read other people put the chick in a cup - which does the same thing- prevents the legs from splaying out to the sides until the muscles get stronger.

You don't want to leave it like that b/c the other babies will start attacking the "worms" and hurt his little foot.

Good luck!
I'm sure others will chime in in the morning!

Maybe it's just the pic, but it looks like his middle toe is swollen? If he's walking as well as the others, I don't think it's spraddle leg.

Don - I had this very question a couple weeks ago!

So - would you use a hen with a bit of pale skin on the ear lobe?
I have 2 sitting in the layer house while I wait to see if it grows out...
First thing to remember is use the very best we have. If need be I would use these two female and mark the chicks and keep a close eye on them. Use a male that shows no white of any kind on the lobes.

This very seldom disappears with age so would not wait on that. How are the males from the same hatch or batch, if they show white would be a different situation.

Barb~ CONGRATS!!!!!!! What's the word this morning? Do you have a Splash baby yet?

Vicki~ That's AWESOME NEWS! Keeping fingers crossed!
I have 9 pips out of the 11 that went into lockdown. One is working very hard at finishing zip, so we should have our first one out very soon.

Debbi~ Wheatie-pie is adorable!

Slick~ How old is your roo? I love his copper by the way.

Don~ I am going to post a couple photos could you please give me your advise.....I need to make a decision, one Splash roo is going to stay here, I can't figure out which one would be my best choice. Will post in just a couple moments. Do you have time?

Also saw a wet black one under Naima's wing first thing this morning. That fabulous blue has been out and taking on the world. First meal was out of my hand. Mama Naima wouldn't instruct him to eat out of the dish but when I put the crumbles in my hand, she was giving him the EAT THIS command. Happy Canada Day to me!!!!
