Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Arielle, The best or easiest way to get 5 Point comb is use fowl with 4-6 points. Very seldom will a 1/2 point deduction affect the outcome of placing the fowl unless you are in a big show with a lot of competition. Will be a while before Marans breeders and show people have that problem, as just are not that many in a class at this point.
Arielle, the number of points does not bother me as much as the twisted combs, lopped combs, split blade, the thumbprints and the sprigs.

OK DOn, a very practical answer! All else being equal, how to increase the incidence of 5 pointed combs?
Arielle, If you use fowl with 4-6 points in the breeding program over and over you will get lots of 5 point combs. It sure doesnt work like a computer where you click 2 and then 8 and get all 5 pointers. The closer the averages you use the easier.

In my experience I would not use an 8 or 10 pointer as a breeder. I would not use a male with more than 6 points in any breeding program.

Marcy, just dawned on me that you have not posted a picture with all the Brown in the breast ?

I have already culled any males that had brown/copper in the breast as my understanding is, the blacker and less color in the breast, the better. I hope I am right on that!!

I can only ask about those things I know about-- you just gave me 3 new things to understand. Twisted combs, lopped combs and split blade. Thumb print and sprigs I think every one culls. Same with the other 3?

Hello Friends (and others...) just thought that I would chime in to say that it reached 64 here today...looks to be kinda wet for the next few days...There is, however, a wildfire in the scenic Columbia River Gorge that has just taken off in the last few hours. Winds are 25-30mph....
