Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I geuss I was asking what they look like in France. Would that not be the Breed Standard? and I think if you learn to speak French that the birds would understand better what color pattern's you are wanting them to breed...just saying..lol
Our standards may not be the french standard.

And I had a horse from Holland--she didn't understand me for years!

I am a newbie. I toiled over what breeds to get to start my small flock of 6. I ordered my birds from Ideal. And had to wait 2 months for the hatch of Favorelles and Polish I wanted. Love them all but wish I had gotten some Marans. The dark egg thing intriques me and I am a foodie.
Does someone within 50 Miles of Ocala breed them? I`m not insane about chickens yet to drive further than that but I feel it coming.

First thing to remember is use the very best we have. If need be I would use these two female and mark the chicks and keep a close eye on them. Use a male that shows no white of any kind on the lobes.

This very seldom disappears with age so would not wait on that. How are the males from the same hatch or batch, if they show white would be a different situation.

Thanks, Don!
No white on the males from those hatches - just these two girls.
I have them in the laying coop, so they can stay there.

I did have one male youngster from an autumn hatch with a tinge of white, gorgeous boy (of course!), but I sent him to the table as soon as I saw it.

Haven't seen it before or since...so maybe it was the roo - ?? -
I did change roos on that coop, in favor of a nicer young boy, about half way through hatching season.

How do the genetics on that white work?

Pic of the day--BCM cockerel #13. This boy is a bit younger than the others I have posted, I believe. Also almost no tail feathers, so I know that makes him harder to evaluate. I hate when that happens! Too many feather-pullers in the pen, I believe. So far I have: keep #12 & #37; cull #10 (the dark boy); maybe cull #11? Some liked him, Don thought bad comb but honestly I can't see the difference between his comb set at the back of the head and #37's. Now I have a better idea of what to show in the pics, I may need to get some new pics. Anyway, here is cockerel #13:

Vicki~ Our first Birchen baby is here!!!!!!!

Don~ Going to go get more photos of them. Have to check on preggers goat anyway. Will post them ASAP.

Also have new photos of my young Blue Copper cockerel, who crowed for the first time yesterday and it was pathetic, LOL!

Be right back.
OHHHH!!!! SOOOO EXCITING! I just CANNOT wait to see what you get and what I get here in about a week and a half!

Wee tiny boy comb if ever I saw one!

Hands on - or rather on hand .... first meal (I'm honoured!) Broody Naima wouldn't instruct him to eat from the dish but she did give him the eat command when the food was on the hand.

Kim, I'm on my way out very soon, but I'm dying to know how many chicks you have now! I still can't believe it went so fast, and that mine are so close now! I had to look at the calendar and realized mine hatch on July 9th, but if they are like most of my other Marans hatches, will be Sunday the 8th! so 7 or 8 days more to wait, and that's it!
