Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am running a steady FIFTY pages behind! But had to share that my FAV hen (popcorn) is hatching out some Marans chicks as we speak! Freaking out here a little as she is in the main coop. I am working like gangbusters on a broody pen for her -and then need to do 2 more for the other broodys! I'm not a fan of showgirls, but wow that Lazer was something. So sorry! Sweatie the Wheatie And I have yet to see baby goatee picks... Still have 50 pages to go, hope I'm not disappointed!

We send our meat birds to slaughter- little strange lady does it for $3 a bird as well. Takes her about an hour to process 30 chickens for us. I could never handle doing it myself- and my husband (the great might hunter) processed a couple roosters we had a while back (freebie free ranging birds) and he has not been willing to do it again lol. He talks about bringing the spare cockerels to the slaughter lady when ready- but I can't bring myself to do it. I prefer finding homes for them..... if the people choose to do it, then don't tell me about it and you can take them home lol. Meat birds vs regular chickens are totally different.... in my eyes anyways.

Good morning all!
Much cooler here today, up into the upper 80s, and we all can deal with that!

Blarney ~ Good luck with the broody hatch! Don't want to spoil the ending of your 50 page read, but I believe there are some goatie pics back there somewhere. Yes, Lazer was a nice boy, it is still sad not to see him and his Dr. Suess-ish looking little self in the mornings. If anyone had told me I would EVER have Silkies or Showgirls 3 years ago, I would've laughed in their faces! All I can say is, never say never!

Vicki ~ Any good news this morning????

BYC posting is back to it's old tricks again. Getting the beta reply frame again...

ugh....I haven't gone to look yet. I have Gremmy the wild hooligan kitten out at the moment, but when I get him worn out I'll put him back in his play pen to rest. I wish he could be outside, but I'm sure the tom outside would kill him. I'm not looking forward to seeing what I find.

Well, I sure hope you find a pleasant surprise awaiting you!

Funny cats here, they all lay around on my deck like a pride of lions, toms included. I had one very pretty kitten that decided that it wanted to sleep under my truck. I always look for cats and chickens before I back out. I even rev the motor and hit the horn. Well this one didn't move, and I ran it over. Seems it always happens to the real pretty ones. I was sickened, but was in a hurry that day, and had to go right then, so I would deal with the kitten when I got back, knowing it was dead. Hmm, the other day, my dog is growling at something under the deck. All of a sudden, here comes this white streak shooting out from under the deck and into the brush. ??? It was the kitten! When I had gotten back from my appointment that day, the cat was gone, and I figured the bad chickens had hauled it off.

Evidently not! It's alive and well, and even a bit bigger than the rest! I sure don't know where it's been hiding for so long, that all happened at least 3 weeks ago. I can tell you one thing, when it hears me open the truck door, it is OUTTA THERE!!

I have aptly named him "Ghost"...

well...just went and looked and nothing new....the smell was even worse, so I pulled the eggs and tossed them, and have the chick set up in a wee brooder box by himself....he's screamin his head off and not sure he'll make it, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

Not what I was hoping for, but seems like the ones I want to hatch most, don't go well... I'll probably try to see if I can get more eggs down the line when this extreme heat is over for the year if Rod still has some to offer

My boys are out of the car until it is turned around and headed down the drive way . . . . they move the ducks and turkeys to a safety zone . . then they run for the car. I'm sure we are on borrowed time and an accident is inevitable. Glad Ghost was born with 9 lives; cats sure need them!

Oh, that stinks, so sorry. Maybe you should call / e-mail him and let him know now you will be wanting more in the future? Did you do an eggtopsy?

Sorry Vicki, It seems to happen to me every time I want the eggs really bad, they don't hatch or don't hatch very well. Like Blue Rocks! Didn't think I could buy a roo out of those eggs.

I think you are right to wait till it cools down. But I would let him know so he can hold a spot for you down the road.

Morning everyone! Gotta make a feed run, I was totally out of pullet grower yesterday. Just enough to feed everyone, but that was it.... nothing for today! Glad the temps have cooled off, hate moving feed in 109.... 88 is much better.
