I actuLly like the clean lefgs it seems to me that the feathered lefgs will get nasty dirty. I guess if you are just wanting them for the egg color it wouldn't matter

I personally like the clean legged birds myself. I do think there is a place for the English style as well as the French. For angora rabbits, both the french and the english are recognized breeds.

and the hubby wants to wait to put them under the broodies! Come on, really???!?!! Wait?? noooo .... they will accept those eggs with open arms and treat them with tender care just like the post office did!

Thanks.... I am really itching to get them under those girls! He wants to wait until dark, but I say boot them out of the boxes, put the eggs in there and let them have at it! lol Patience was never one of my best traits...... especially with chickies

Are those girls sitting on anything right now? Edited: Should have asked if they have been sitting on anything while waiting for these eggs?

Just a reminder that if you do not let the eggs rest before you set them , it is very unlikely they will hatch. I would wait at least 12 houre to let them gather themselves.

Thank you for the reminder Don. I forgot that little tidbit of information on shipped eggs.... normally we just take eggs just laid from the ladies to the broodies.

One hen has been broody for over 10 weeks now.... and just about everyday a hen gives her an egg. She doesn't have it very long... maybe and hour or two at most. Just enough to keep her going! One other hen is a pro and actually hatched 12 for us about 9 weeks ago. She is very quick to set on any eggs- but the other ladies wont go near her lol. As for the other broody... well she young and this is her third attempt at being broody. First time she was still in the coop (on third day) and 3 out of 9 eggs were damaged due to the other hens wrestling her and she abandoned the remaining. Second time she pecked (watched in horror...) and squished two out of five eggs and about a week later abandoned the others. The other older hen took over those three- as they were hatching about the same time. I am confident that Mother hen will do a great job- as she always does. Her daughter (the 10 week broody) seems to be just as committed as her mother... I trust she will do well. And the third..... well she has to earn my respect lol She may only get two eggs.... also, the incubator is all set up and at temp. I have never used an incubator and hope that I don't have to this time. I'll let the professionals try first lol

Yes..... it is a DQ in the APA SOP. The accepted SOP for Marans is French (with feathered legs) and the English breed them without feathered legs. I hatch them pretty often with clean legs. I don't breed them as I am breeding to the SOP.
