Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My husband thought I was off my rocker talking about protein for my chickens this morning. Found a bag of spare ribs from July 4th BBQ I forgot about in the back bottom shelf of the fridge...My little Marans were in heaven this morning. I use Blue Seal feed so I'll have to check the protein content on those - I love the drive-thru Blue Seal has. My Marans are 6 1/2 weeks and I definitely have less girls and more boys than I thought. Just need one good rooster and 4-5 pullets.

Well- first time (after 11 weeks!!) broody quit this morning. 10 Eggs and off them for an hour. Barely made it 12 hours. Tried switching to the third backup "broody" but once again she backed out.... making it her fourth failed attempt to be a broody. I ended up putting them in the incubator- and now the first time broody is at it in the coop- looking for more eggs! She is certainly frustrating me.... now what do we do? I have never incubated eggs..... do I dare try on these beauties?!?!!!

Oh and I have to manually turn and have no hygrometer lol yeah..... been holding consistent temp for 5 days though.

Look up the incubators anonymous thread--lots of addicts and long time hatchers there as well; if you have an LG or another model, look up that thread on BYC for tips on your particular incubator.

I track humidity, if only to make sure it is low enough. WItht he hot humid weather, the eggs have not been drying properly, so I moved a de humidifyier into the hatching room. 35% RH was not working for me. Now it is about 25%, that will work better.

You are in the same climate I am. What incubator are you using?

weirdness on the way to work today. There were two, probably 3 to 4 month old speckled sussex chickens dead in the middle of the road about a mile from home. I'm really about the only one for several miles all directions that has chickens, so it was really strange. Kind of left me pondering how in the heck they got there.

Poor birdies.

If I can get myself motivated, I might try to see about getting some update shots of younger birds. Just got back from inventorying the whole store with the owners, so I'm just exhausted at the moment.
