Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just received an SOP lately.  Does anyone know why Marans are not in there?  I read somewhere that they were accepted but I don't see them.  Maybe they were accepted after the last printing?

I think I just bought one and will now will have to get another one after the next printing.  Rats!!!

Bingo.

I had read there was supposed to be a insert for Marans. Even if they do a reprint there will be no pictures. They don't redo the SOP for about 10 years. I didn't get the insert either.

huh - we can always ask Walt...
I'm hoping I get an insert - he said it was in the back of the book.
Did you check waaayyy in the back?

Donna ~ I think I'd e-mail or call the APA and ask them about the insert. They may not have gotten them into all of the books, and are holding back in hopes that people don't have Marans?? Who knows, but I think I'd sure ask them.

We finally had a cool night, got down to 58*, and I slept like a rock! Took the dogs out at 6:30 this morning, and the cool felt so good, I went right back to bed til 9:00! Have no fear though, the temps are climbing already, the humidity is up, and it is supposed to get to 99* here today, with temps climbing over the next few days. Still no rain chances until Thursday!

So sorry! I know that you are miserable! I do wish I could send some rain your way. We didn't get any rain in June and now we are 6 inches over for the month of July... go figure. That is the official number, I know we have had more rain than that. 2 days ago we got about 4.5 - 5 inches at the farm and it rained again last night. Every time it rains we get a couple of inches and it has rain several days in a row and stop for a day or two and start right back up. When it was 109 there was like no humidity and now you can wring your clothes out every time you walk outside...

I hope you can get a fix for your AC... all of you that are without. I couldn't stand that for long in that heat. We drove the truck yesterday NO AC and I was about to die!

Quote: The bottom line is: I don't need to know the exact humidity, as the air cell will tell me if it is correct !

Use your hydrometer, it will help you with the general readings. In my LG: RH was running 35-40 % until front passed thru; dropped to 25%. Do you have a diagram taped where you can use it during candling?

A youngster bought eggs from me twice this spring to try out her homemade fishtank incubator. First try 4/18 hatched. THen she revamped the incubator design. AND increased the air flow AND used a diagram. 8/16 hatched. I hatch 90% of those eggs, so I KNOW the humidity is the problem. Eggs are not loosing enough moisture. Maybe some others can comment on how much moisture to loose for a marans, generally I read 11-13% drop in weight of the eggs.

As no one mentioned why it is a he--- the brown coloring far down his back near the tail is only on the boys. He is just starting to put on his coloring.

Gees, who lets 3 day old chicks out free?? It amazes me how moronic some people can be. A lady that came here to get some chicks was told to make sure she immediately and physically showed the chicks the water and food when she got them home. I told her to hold them and dunk their beaks in the water a few times so they know what it is. She asked, "don't you feed them water??" Well of course I do. "Then why do I need to show them the water?" I had to chuckle and told her, "well, say you were in a strange town, and went to a strange restaraunt, and found you needed the bathroom quickly. Would you go looking for it yourself chancing an accident, or would you ask someone where the restroom was??" Ahhhhhh, ok now I get it...sheesh.

Poor analogy I know, but she was a blonde, so it evidently clicked? No offense to the blondes out here!!
