Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The three pullets seem to have real good type from what I can see. As long as the copper stays on the hackle feathers you will be ok with these. The black will not show as BC. Some show them as Black Marans if they have no Copper.

Will also say look at the rows of tail feathers on the two pullets were it tail width shows. The two pullets are extremely nice wide open tail Marans. Using these with the right male will produce you some real nice open tail male and pullets.

Hi All, I'm looking for some input. The same cockerel in the the first two photos- his backend was up-wind so his tailfeathers are held way high. I am looking more for color/marking input- he is 4 months old. Same with the pullet, 4 months old, I have some pullets with more copper and some with less. Thanks for all your input.

I think the colors are beautiful

I understand that I'm going to get A LOT of constructive critisism. It is what I'm asking for. I will really be looking at his tail, harshly! Please don't stop! I was just trying to, I don't know, explain all the factors going on in the photos. None of my cockerels have good tail feathering for some reason, but they are generation 1 for me with BCM so the learning curve will be steep, I hope. I'm sending another photo. Please be honest :)

Thanks, I guess I'm in the market for a new stud bird. I'll check the earlobe but I don't remember seeing any. My cockerel numbers have really dropped. 1 with a flopped comb, 1 with a white primary, and this guy with his tail. Drat! Thanks though. Thats what I'm looking for.

Study the faults thread for Marans and familiarize yourself with the Marans faults and DQs. Most of the faults will breed forward. Just have to pick your battles.

I do not like Brother-Sister matings for the marans. After you have them a few year you will have extra males to use for breeding. What line are these BC anyway.

Don - can you please explain a bit more on the tails and where to look at width?

We seem to be looking from the side of those pullets, so do you mean how there are 2 clear rows of feathers?

I think I need an arrow
