Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

These are all the same bird.

Are you 100% certain that these are all the same bird? pic 1 & 2 look different to me - hackles are different shade, tail looks longer in pics 2....if they are, in fact, the same male, I guess this is a good example of why it's not really the best idea to make decisions based on a picture. Sigh. I would hold off on sellling at this time - see if you can buy more time from your buyer, and get us more pics, then post them separately, each bird per post, as you did this time. Get the pictures from down at the bird's level, more like picture 1, show us shank feathering, and is THIS the male with the wraparound point issue?

Hello all..... I know there is an awful lot of talk about combs and such lately and I have a question regarding the only marans roo I have right now. He is about 9.5 weeks old. Of three roos, he was my favorite and is the only one I have not rehomed. Of course all the talk of combs, type, etc has me looking more in depth at my birds and wonder if he is worth keep - even for me, just a backyard breeder, not interested in showing. I want to have birds of somewhat good quality- not junk, as some have put it

Please tell me what you think of him so far......... and I know that I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch- but I anticipate if any chicks hatch from what I have cooking now, I will have more roos to choose from.

Here is Smokey- the shy boy....... he is one of the lowest on the pecking order and quite shy. He usually has his back to me and looking over his shoulder at me. I personally like his quiet nature. He just goes with the flow, at the back of the flock.....

Please excuse the extra comb on his neck !!! LOL!

Sprig??

I have noticed a slight flop in the back side of his comb.... does this get progressively worse??

Thank you all for helping me learn!
Are you referring to that tiny bump on the back of the blade? I guess I just can't see it well enough, that 4th pic I see a tiny bump that runs BACKWARD, is that what you're referring to? Also, on the last pic, I see thickness at the base...but I don't see a sprig going out to the side, as is typical of sprigs. Debbi likely has a better pair of eyes to see than me!

One thing of note is that this male's eyes are too dark. From what I can see, though, he appears to have good type, and he'll be a big boy since he's showing as double breasted already!

No rain last night either, zip. All kinds of distant thunder though for a good tease. I am now dreading this winter coming. Food prices, human and animal are going to be through the roof! Gas is going back up again too. I think the whole world needs to stop, and everybody drop their prices on everything back to the 1960s price rate. Just think of all you could do and buy if you still had the same paycheck, but paid 60s prices!! Ahh, a nice pipe dream anyway!

Yes Im positive this is the same roo. He has been separated from the others and he is much larger than the other one. The bird with the wrap around point is actually a Blue Pullet. I will try and do separate pictures for each tonight If I can. Im just wondering sometimes If Im inadvertently fooling myself with these. As Don said, junk is junk.

Its been 100+....well more like 104 to 107 for so many days over the last three weeks that this 68 feels like a God send. I think everyone here is starting to seriously feel the affects of the heat, tired and crabby all the time haha

Well, so much for the cool morning, it's already 95 here! High for the day my foot! I think we've only had like 2 or 3 days that got under 90* since the end of May. Most of those days it has been in the 100s here too. I'm looking at some property in Maine!!

It's been a thought for a while now. Been looking for places that have more moderate temps, NO tornadoes, and are fairly cheap to live. Plus, Maine has LOBSTERS!!!!!!!!! :drool Besides that, my Sister lives in Mass. and I would finally get to see her again, and also meet her hubby and her kids!! Haven't seen my sis since before my Mom died back in 1994. Just a thought, but it's been a lingering one...
