I resorted to cutting the grass behind the bushhog and feeding that to the chickens.

I don't know how much I am going to do that..... but they loved it! (lots of grit too)

Hi guys!!!
My shipped chicks are finally starting to lay! So the egg on the left is too light to even be considered a marans I am pretty sure. She will be great for eating eggs. But the one on the far right is a first pullet egg. That is a hopeful egg color isn't it? Almost a 5 right??
And pullet eggs are lighter right? Or am I imagining I read that somewhere?

another blue born overnight. This one seems to have snuck out from away from mama and we found it cold. Still making lots of noise though and is under her now. Better make it! I love them blues

Great find, Vicki!!

See: good things happen to good people!

Today, I found my "missing" guineas!
Turns out that 3 girls and 1 boy were sitting on their communal nest - over in the neighbor's woods (could hear them - just thought they were picking bugs)

They were proud, but somewhat bemused to have 8 little keets trailing after them this AM.

The one girl was getting all annoyed with the little guys (3 were barely on their feet - probably less than 24hrs old) and kept poking at them like "Hey - stay in line and keep up with the others!"

I took 4 and left the "team" with 4, so we'll see how they do with just 4 to look after.
I was worried that the 3 wobbly ones would be left behind and die...so a cochin bantam is raising them for me now!

So...I'm dying to know if they took them back to their nest tonight or, if they left them on the ground and went to roost with their old friends....
Hoping to see the little guys tomorrow!

When I took the dog out just now I was surprised at the temperature. A cold front is blowing through today and the temperature right now is an icy 65 degrees, with a forecast high today of 88, and the low for Sunday night of 60 (dare we even hope for something in the 50's?). I actually felt CHILLY out there!!! Thank you Lord for this wonderful but short respite from the heat!

Just out of curiosity who would I contact to maybe start a BYC member help fund? Just reading the Sunday paper and it had an artical on the fire in Oklahoma. I know there are members who are from around there. I couldnt imagine not only losing your home but also livestock or pets. Maybe even make an option to become a special member here and use those proceeds go to members that need assistance. What do you guys think?

Wow!!! We finally got some great rains in the last few days!

Last night, we had 2 whopper storms. Heavy winds, hail, lots of lightning, and lots of rain. Guess we can't have one without the other out here in the Midwest? Lots cooler today too, like 79, so the last crazy house chicks are going to be kicked to the coop for good this week! Congrats on all the new babies, and Katelyn, glad you found those crazy Guineas! I guess this week I will have to start thinking of mowing the grass again. Haven't had to mow since the end of MAY!
