Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

just about got it right:

splash x blue= 50% splash, 50% blue

black x splash = 100 % so right on there

blue x blue = 25% splash, 50% blue, 25% black
black x splash =100% ?

The tail angle is mostly genetic, breed a high pinched tail and look for more of the same.

The comb , both of these would be considered about the same. Breed the bad comb but just cull the young real close. Do not breed the male back to his daughters.

Thanks, Don!

I understand what we're looking for in the finished picture and I use those outlines to keep me on track!
BUT - what I'm seeing is tails that I thought were really nice as 4-6mth old males, seem to raise up at maturity - nothing major, not squirrel, but just not the 40-45 degrees we desire.
(parents have good tails!)

So, as I cull the the groups as they age, am I looking for an especially low tail set??

What age do you usually see a more "finished" tail set?
Am I making sense? (or am I over thinking things, as usual haha)

Thanks for the advice on the comb, as well!
I'm just going to single mate the nicer of the two to see if I can add some more beef to my birds!

Just keep in mind thier behavior. My BCM Roo had a low tail set as he was growing, but as he grew to 6 months he would puff up for the girls or people. This would bring it up to almost squirrel tail angle. No hes over that he hold his tail perfect. A many people on here said my bird had squirrel tai and good I didnt listen. He has one the nicest body, back and tail you could as for. Just make sure a watch him. look at his attitude and he's doing. You all see that his tail will usually fine.

hahaha That is me turning green...not the grossing out part just the green. Hmmm I need more smileys to properly express my feelings. hahahaha

Maybe you could make it to the next Crossroads show. That one is HUGE!! You'll see a healthy handful of almost everything at that one. Only happens every few years but the "who's who" of many of the breed clubs make an appearance at Crossroads - WITH THEIR BIRDS! That one is worth a vacation, let me tell you. It really is an eye opener because many of the birds are far from perfect so you really can learn a lot about how folks prioritize.

Ever feel like you can stare at your chicks for weeks and weeks and still not be certain of their gender? LOL! Those stinkin' little Birchens now have me wondering if I am seeing things............like 4 pullets and 2 cockerels instead of the 2 pullets and 4 cockerels I thought they were all along. Makes me go hmmmmmmmm and also making me a bit crazy.Ok, ok....I admit the chicks had nothing to with making me crazy. *hee hee*
