Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Huge congrats on passing 40,000 posts. Especially since only 8/7/10!. Quite an accomplishment for any breed. Lots of great education and breed history there.

One of my 4 month old Pullets just laid her 1st tiny egg....isn't that a little too young?
Who has the darkest egg and great looking FBMC's available nowadays...I think the eggs I've received last are maybe a 4+ color wise...but the color does change by cycle right?

4 months is young. I have had bad luck with the ones that start laying very young. Issues with egg binding down the road.

The first couple of eggs a pullet lays might be a little on the light side but generally speaking the darkest eggs are at the beginning of the cycle and they lighten up quite considerably by the end of the cycle.

My young ones (3 pullets) started laying around July 20th or so. They were about 19 weeks old then.... they (not sure who, didnt seem like all three) laid for several weeks then nothing at all, at least not for the past 2 weeks or so. I think they changed their minds on being egg layers lol. I hope they aren't egg bound... they are now almost 27 weeks old..... slackers

Grrrr......this just burns my butt. I just stumbled upon this Craigslist ad - a friend from another state was asking what laying hens go for around here, so I thought I'd find some CL ads & send to her:

I will have babies hatching shortly. Mostly all of them will be pullets (hens). These are of the Wade Jeanne/Greenfire Farms line. They're adorable, sweet chickens that do very well in Michigan winters, and lay beautiful chocolate brown eggs. They're also one of the rarest breeds of chickens in the United States, due to an over 10 yr old poultry import ban. The chicks that I'm selling will be the babies that I hand raise inside of my home, until they go to their new home. I hold them a lot, check on them constantly, keep them very clean and even carry them around in my apron pockets while I'm doing chores around the house. My main goal is to hatch only pullets, although a cockeral might slip in there every now and then. But, I can sex the birds if you have a preference. $15 each. I believe that they'll all be hatched in the next couple of weeks. And yes, I will contact the people that are already on my waiting list. Veterinarian references will be required.

What in the WORLD...??? um....yeah....I don't even know where to start.

I know, right? Sheesh. Really irritates me, as we all know what will happen when people read this. Sigh.
