Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

That whole ad is ridiculous in itself, which doesn't really surprise me to be honest after some ads I've read. What surprises me and puts the ad waaay over the top for me is the last statement about needing veterinarian references. What the heck is that?

Hi Ms.Wynette!

Ummmmmm is all I can come up to say to that posting as well..........do you suppose this person can teach me how to breed for pullets only? :D

Popping in to say hello to everyone! Hi!!!!!! Hope you are all doing great! Been real busy and haven't had time to check in with ya'll. Got some great shots of my little Birchens but can't get them uploaded. Geesh! Been having more minor issues with BYC the last few log in's. Aces~ That boy is beautiful! Sarnia~ Love the goaties! So much more to catch up on but no time this morning to do it. Dang! Welcome to all the folks joining in on the thread! Donna~ Did you get my response to the PM the other day?

NO!

There was a guy on cl here selling pullet only hatching eggs..... said he could sex them pretty acurratly too. LOL
That reminds me of a fellow who sold me a pair of BCM's and a trio of WFBS, I ask him how he sexed them, he replied Instinct

. He's been doing this for years on total instinct, he's a good sells man cause he's so full of hot air

. Turns out I got 4 roos, and the BCM's pair one wasn't even BCM's it was a cross roo

. And this so called breeder is still getting away with screwing people out of their hard earned money

I'm pretty sure that's what the person who posted the ad I'm referring to is doing. It makes me so angry - unknowing folks will get ripped off by this person. It's just sad.

Grrrr......this just burns my butt. I just stumbled upon this Craigslist ad - a friend from another state was asking what laying hens go for around here, so I thought I'd find some CL ads & send to her:

I will have babies hatching shortly. Mostly all of them will be pullets (hens). These are of the Wade Jeanne/Greenfire Farms line. They're adorable, sweet chickens that do very well in Michigan winters, and lay beautiful chocolate brown eggs. They're also one of the rarest breeds of chickens in the United States, due to an over 10 yr old poultry import ban. The chicks that I'm selling will be the babies that I hand raise inside of my home, until they go to their new home. I hold them a lot, check on them constantly, keep them very clean and even carry them around in my apron pockets while I'm doing chores around the house. My main goal is to hatch only pullets, although a cockeral might slip in there every now and then. But, I can sex the birds if you have a preference. $15 each. I believe that they'll all be hatched in the next couple of weeks. And yes, I will contact the people that are already on my waiting list. Veterinarian references will be required.

What in the WORLD...??? um....yeah....I don't even know where to start.

That is a funny ad. I run across that crap all the time! Maybe I should post one that says my chicks glow in the dark and the parents do tricks!

That sounds like a lady we have in our area, only her catch phrases are "rare", "exotic" and "show quality". Best I can tell from speaking to her is she has never shown, nor does she know of anyone that has shown her birds. Problem is she sells lots of birds to unsuspecting people.

I have devised a list of "to dos" for my first buy sell trade.
Please provide feed back as I do not want to be put in the same catagory as that craigs list poster... (you really hope this person is just parreting what they have been told)

This is my list for my first BST:
#1 - Let the seller know that this is a cull from my breeding line.
#2 - If you have parent photos or information on the family line of the bird includes as many details as you have. (Don't just say you have JG from "Golla Miller" line)
#3 - Have your SOP or your working sheets handy to show why it has become a cull.
#4 - Call a spade a spade. If the bird does not have the essential characteristics of the breed, it is a mutt and call it that.
#5 - Have your Bio on your breeding history ready .... This way you are straightforward and honest. (2 minute infomercial.... name, time breeding and why)

Have I gotten everything folks?
Thanks
Patricia

After much searching (and much disappointment!) I FINALLY got two black copper maran chicks on Saturday- I'm so excited!
Crossing all my crossables that they're hens and not roos!
Loving their little feathered feet!
