Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So what is it? Is it a brown leghorn? What has white ear lobes and yellow legs and some color on the chest?
I haven't seen anything like that before..... Is it a mix from where something jumped the fence?
Yea, it looks a lot like my brown leghorn but not even a good specimen of brown leghorn!!! I hate that, too. I looked at an add from craigs list one day about Ameraucana's and the pictures were, of course easter eggers and something that was so mixed up, I can't even describe it!! Also, she was told the 5 chickens she bought were pullets and only one was a pullet, so now that poor newbee woman had to get rid of 4 of them and had one pullet that was just plain weird!

Hey, my daughter just told me a friend of hers from college wrote a cute children's book about hatching chickens so I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire. It was wonderful and accurate! It's called Samantha Hatches the Chicken Egg by Daisy Griffin. If you have kids or grandkids, this is a great book to tell them about hatching eggs. Enjoy! oh yea, she also mentions BYC in the book!!!!

Just a word of caution. Just remember that on CL you do not have the Moderators to run to and hide when someone says something you do not like and surely when you email people there you will need a place to hide.

I say just mind your own business as they are not asking for a critique like folks on BYC do. It has not been very long on here BYC when if I mentioned people selling bad quality Marans people would say it was the buyers responsibility to know what you are buying. Sure is amazing how things change.

I agree with Snowbird. Their birds may not meet the quality and standards laid out here on BYC but I don't think they are really misrepresenting the birds, just talking them up - perhaps way up. Most of the birds sold around here, on craigslist or otherwise are hatchery or hatchery-like stock. Folks learn soon enough, if they want to, how and where to get quality birds (I had to take that journey myself) and not everyone is wanting to be a 'proper' breeder, some folks just want to sell chickens and some folks just want to buy chickens. Plus craigslist has some 'interesting' folks that I really would not want to invite into my personal life.

Today is a gorgeous day here in southern NH. Gotta get outside. Have a fun day all!

eta - I sell all kinds of stuff on craigslist so I guess I'm including myself there too....

HI Balckbirds,
Georgous here but our mutual hawk has been circling today. Keep an eye on the skies. I am definitely guilty of selling hatchery stock on craigslist but to help fund my new found love for CL's. I'm hoping to keep some of the FBCMs from the eggs I just got from a fellow byc member and will be trying for good quality spring laying flock.

Went out and caught the two boys...and they were NOT happy....for pictures. The more I look at them, the more I think it will be Red Boy as the breeding stock. He is bigger, blockier and smoother in his colored bits, except for the breast. Am I correct in believing it will be easier to adjust color over type? Here are the pictures for critique --- don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings, but I do have to choose one of them since these are the only two I have to start with.

We'll start with the head. Here is Red Boy's evil glare and the I'm not going to cooperate pose. Note the heavy copper spotting in his breast feathers.

Sunset Boy's head --- he's much more cooperative. Clean black breast, not liking the uneveness of his hackle coloration so much.

Top/Rear view. Sorry, this is the best I could do with unhappy roos without an assistant to help take the pictures.

Red Boy is first. Tried to get a better shot in a pen too.

Sunset boy, again, more cooperative.

There really is nothing you can do except grumble when it comes to Craigslist.
Just like e-bay when you get hatching eggs. They came on time? You're done. They don't care if the post office scrambled them, or if any hatched.
You received eggs, that is it.
CL...It's a chicken. Done.

BUYER BEWARE. That's why I came here, and why most of you peeps are here.
To figure out what is this crap we got!

Back atcha puglady,
Saw him give me a drive by a few times but have my netting up and no one's free ranging today. Most folks in NH are pretty satisfied with the hatchery stock I think and the pricing is right for around here, I only sold off my Ameraucanas by putting them on here. The price was too high for craigslist. I hear you on the CLB's - I love them. My Black Coppers are growing up pretty nicely. I have one girl that is gonna be HUGE and at least 3 of them seem to have good type and color coming up. I am hoping for just 1 good rooster or I'll try again next year. Right now I'm waiting for everyone to start laying so I can see what I've got and despite the fact I really am too busy I am hatching more CLB's - just a few to make up for what I lost to predators this summer.
The BCM chicks I got from you did not survive the heater lamp going out that night - it was so sad seeing them laying there. Ant and I tried to coax the last little survivor back to life and used a heating pad to try and warm him up but it was to no avail...Ant was very sad about it but we have new chicks for him to love on now so all is well. Hope your chicks turn out well. You should post some pics.
