Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi All
I have been lurking and sucking up knowledge from all the great posts here.
I have the pleasure of some of Donna's BC Marans and am VERY pleased with the shape of the birds.

My question to you all:

Is anyone coming north for the APA show on Oct 27th at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada?
Look forward to meeting anyone who is coming.

Patricia

I'm coming but only bringing Silkies and Ameraucanas. My Marans are not yet worthy of the show ring although I am very excited about some blue coppers that I am growing out and hope to show next year.

Would like some critiques on a few of my pullets hatched this year. They are all sisters from a single mated pair of BCM hatched between March and May of this year. The pics are from youngest to oldest and a group shot at the end. What do you think of the last pullets tail, something about her hits me wrong, just can't pinpoint it. She is the only one laying so far, it is a 6 on the chart, maybe slightly lighter than mom. Some of the girls have a chalky looking earlobe, definitely not pearl white. Some funky combs but no DQ's. Of course, would like more copper but they are showing more than Mom. All have very nicely feathered legs all the way down the outside toe, no feathers on middle toe (sold all chicks with middle toe feathering at hatch, mistake??). Two of them have 1/4" white on an outer toe feather. Opinions on breeding any of these back to Dad come Spring? Have not produced any sons nicer than Dad yet but have 15 more chicks from the same pair hatched over the last month to growing out.

My Marans pullet laid her first egg today.

I'm not sure of the proper placement on the color scale, but i believe its atleast a 4 maybe even a 5. What do the experts say?

the other eggs are from my barred rock and my SBEL ( Super Blue Egg Layer). Thanks in advance.

I take my Marans eggs and color chart into the sunshine to match the egg color to the chart. I have a hard time differentiating a #3 from a #4, they look very close to me. That egg is what I call a #3 to #4 in color. Anybody care to differ?

I was re-reading the SOP thread and found this...

Comments? what do we all think of these pics? (These are not my birds, by the way.)

How appropriate are these photos to go along with the shank color discussion. They were previously used to discuss leg feathering, if I remember correctly.

Zanna . . .
I am coming back to this if no one else does...

I WANT SOMETHING FIRST!
I want the black and white sketch outlining the marans body type...
I want it for the male and female...

CAN SOMEONE POST IT AGAIN - PLEASE

I NEED to add it to my SOP thread... PLEASE ... POST it AGAIN....

I look forward to meeting you Barb.
I have little to no experience showing so I thought I would bring 5 of my best and just see what happens....
I decided to bring 2 of my BC Marans and one Blue Copper. I reviewed the sketch that was reposted here and I believe the 3 marans I will bring have that profile... they are not perfect.... not enough copper and one of the girls has a wobbly comb, but I figure I am going with Syb and she is bringing birds, so, I might as well!
I am also bringing 2 black Ameraucana pullets that I would like to get opinions on... totally different lines, but I want to understand the body type better for my Lav. experiment.
See you soon.
Patricia

Glad to hear that you are taking the plunge and bringing out some Marans!!! (I have never shown birds before either so brand new experience for me as well.) No bird will ever be perfect so we have to jump in somewhere. Sounds like it's going to be a great show with lots of breeds relatively new to this area in Canada being well represented.
