Ok, just a random question. Do you think there would be any interest in a lavender copper marans?? I have some lav mix birds and was told I could develop lav in any breed I want with them and was thinking of putting the roo over my bc next year. Ideas?

Heck yes I would be interested ! how long would it take to get the coloring and the egg color right? is the rooster from a blue egg line? I think it would be cool to have our own "american" color of Marans so that we can show off birds to the europeans for once

is it a peacomb blue egger for the araucana and ameraucana projects? if so it will be much more difficult as both pea comb and blue egg gene are dominant I actually think the best way to go about this would be with one of Jody and Charlies Lavender Orph's maybe someone could get an off cast next year or when they have extras?

I'd love some!

And on another note, I would like us all to reach around and pat ourselves on the back for reaching a thousand posts on a single thread about a very controversial breed of chicken which in the past usually got threads shut down within a few pages because people would just melt down in having any discussion about them. WE ROCK!!!!!

Hey, you're right. This thread has survived and I have learned so much from everyone and have so enjoyed all the pictures that people have posted.

There are a bunch of really nice, fun people on this site who have a very keen interest in the breed.

This is a great thread with some really good info! Thanks, Drom.

What are your thoughts on Roo/Hen ratio for the Marans?

It seems to be more an issue with the Black Coppers than the Cuckoos. I have a dozen Cuckoo hens in a flock with 2 Roos and they all get along great and the eggs hatch like popcorn.

On the other hand, if I have 3 BC Roos that if they can even SEE each other, they fight through the fence!

I have 7 BC hens of laying age. Around 75% is typical hatch rate for the BCs. For fertility sake, would it be better to separate them to groups of 3 and 4 with a Roo each or rotate my Roos through the hen pen every week or so?

What size pen/coop works best for breeding? I have some small Roo holding pens that are 3' x 3' x 3'. Are they too small to house a pair for 24 hours for breeding a particular Hen to a particular Roo?

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Greg

I had three roos together doing well, then removed one for a few days and was never able to put him back. The two that are still together are doing "okay" but I am starting to see little bloody spots on their combs. Not sure if they are fence fighting with the other guy, since there is just chain link between them, or if the two roommates are fighting. When I am with them I don't see them sparring or posturing, so not sure what is causing the comb damage.

If i was going to separate the roos into smaller breeding groups, I would not rotate them that fast, maybe every few months, so I could see who was producing better with certain hens, but that is just me and I like to cause myself a lot of extra headaches by tracking pedigrees and performance. Comes from breeding horses and dogs for years. sorry. If you wanted the hens to be fertile at all times from both roos, then yes, swithching them every week would work.

A 3x3x3 cube would be too crowded for long term keeping of a group of CBM's. Fine for a single roo, and toss a hen in with him for a few days to get her bred, but for long term you would probably have problems. Especially with more than one hen. I would imagine pecking and canibalism would be a short step in such a small confinement.

Cant wait til we can swap Marans stuff here and there - I'm tickled with my Cuckoo Marans eggs right now - I am holding my breath waiting for the Black Copper girls, they might lay as early as January!! If they do, they will be getting their private quarters, just like my Cuckoo Marans! And so it will begin!

Happy Holidays!

Hey everyone! I have been skiing, winterizing, hatching and raising babies (the two legged non-human kind

) and trying to get my kids a nice christmas for cheap. Don't have much to say, other than WOW!!!!!!!!!!! 1,000 posts and no troll has shut us down yet!!!!!!!!!!

I love gnomes, btw, but not trolls, even if I am from Swedish stock.

Nice eggs everyone! I am in love with my wheaten Marans. I also just hatched 17 wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucana. Dang they are just the cutest!

The dang chickie dust does NOT look like spray snow from those cans. I am never hatching babies late in the fall again.

Okay. Bye now!

BTW, I had a HORRIBLE hatch from all those gorgeous dark blue/black Coppers. Only got 2 from them and neither were blue. (In a way I am relieved as I cannot have any more colors/pens)

We are offering a new Marans of America Logo Checkbook cover with the membership until Dec. 15th.
Would make a great present for any Marans breeder.
Has the egg chart on the back of it.

Thanks

If you want more info just ask. I'll get it to you.
