I have a couple of questions about showing the eggs. Are they supposed to be out of the same hen? Also are they fresh or are they preserved some way to keep them from rotting until show time?

Thanks,

Renee

Yes, they are supposed to be fresh. But they can be refrigerated to stay fresh. But you don't want them to be real old

The points are scored on Intensity of Color, Shape, Texture and Uniformity. I entered more than one set. And my darkest set didn't get pinned. It was the set with the best uniformity and shape that got pinned.
So, it's important that all three eggs match up very well in terms of shape and color and texture. The judges don't want to see 3 eggs that look different or don't have a very even color and texture. For me it was easier to match up eggs that came from the same hen but you don't have to.

As far as I know, she doesn't have a web site that she advertises eggs at or anything. I spoke with her once and she seems really nice albeit a little besieged by people contacting her saying gimee, gimee.

She said at the time people don't seem to realize she only has one hen laying like this and she can't send a dozen eggs to everyone. I think she tries to send a least one wonder egg in each batch of six. At least that is what she said at the time and has posted since, but I can't speak for her and don't have any web site info or anything. So, she posts on the MCC and there are pictures of her eggs and chicks there. So that is where you should go to find wonder eggs.

I've gotten hatching eggs twice from wonder hen, they are huge!

Sadly, I never hatched any chicks.

Fertility did seem to be an issue since eggs were originally sold but after getting poor hatch rates from buyers they were offered at no charge requesting shipping only and then to pay for the chicks if any hatched.

These are the eggs from a few months back.

WH = wonder hen eggs

Hi Henry!
Good to see you again...haven't seen you in a while.

The marans you have pictured above are nice, but I just wanted to point out how straight up and down the tail is. In the APA standards, this is a fault as you want a rounded, loose "U" shape from the head around top of body to tail. Here is an example:

This is a pic of one of the birds sent to APA to create standards. I just wanted to put that out there so people that are serious about a BCM Marans breeding program and possible showing, know one of the standards to breed for.

Thanks for posting pics of your girls! How are your blues doing??
I started a Blue Birchen project and just hatched her first 2 eggs. 1 was a blue birchen and the other a pure white Marans!! AND, her eggs are a nice dark red russet, unlike my other girls which are more on the "purplish" side.

How's school??!
