Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

The one you guys are calling a roo, looks just like my second chick born, lots of comb right out of the shell. Mine are two weeks old now, and I'll have to post some more pics. The only one that even remotely resembles a BCM, is the roo looking one. I have no clue what the other 3 could be. UrbanFarmerboi, I would love to see some pics of your Pene chicks at around two weeks if you have any? You could PM me. One of these chicks is so UGLY I can barely stand to look at it! Strange posture/body, strange coloring, even stranger wings, light feathering on the legs in yellow. Acts healthy though, loves to chase flies and moths that may happen into the brooder, that is really a hoot to watch! This thing looks like a combination of a chicken and a crane! You'll see when I post the pics. Will try to get them all seperately, but they are very active and flighty, except the dark roo-looking one. I'll have to send these pics to the breeder too, he may have (or definately does have!) a rogue roo in the hen house!

Urbanfarmboy.... I am chimining in with... It is a very cute, Bayhorsebonne looking roo. It is a wade line??? I would go with a very boyish look... It is always a good idea to hold out till there is a saddle color...just in case.

Ok, here we go. Not a great photographer, and my batteries are evidently low.

Here is the one I think is a roo, "Beaut", second chick born. Sparse shank feathering

This is "Pretty", the first chick born, no shank feathers. Very outgoing and curious

This is the last chick born, "Precious", the lightest in the bunch that caused all the questioning in the first place. Sparse leg feathering. Very dainty and active!

And then, there is "Fuglee". Could not get this chick to stand in it's normal posture. It usually stands very erectly, long legs and with those long wings, looks like it has no butt! Sparse, yellow feathered shanks. This was the chick that I had to help. Slower witted than the others, but active and otherwise healthy. Actually, she looks better in the pic than in life! Poor thing, is still one of God's creatures. Maybe an "ugly duckling" ??

So, what could these be?? After looking at numerous BCM chick pics, these "ain't" them!

All are growing feathers, wings, back and tails. Fuglee's wing feathers are about an inch longer than everyone else's. Will send these pics to the breeder and suggest a rogue roo in the mix, and see if I can get another batch of eggs! Got some more eggs coming in tomorrow, then that will be it until winter. Don't ask me who they're from, we'll wait to see how the chicks turn out first!

- you win some and you lose some. We both knew that whatever hatched out would be a bit of a miracle in itself. So I'm honestly not bummed! I'm happy with my little chick!

I'm still going to be crossing my fingers that it's a pullet instead of a cockerel, but what can I do if it's not? Now, I could keep the little guy if I really decided to. I'm on the fence whether or not I'm going to continue my Lav Orp project, if I make the decision to sell my cockerel then I could keep this Marans chick. IF he is a blue, not a black like I first assumed... that might make him even more of a keeper. I love blue chickens.

So! Yeah. I dunno. I'm going to give it a few weeks and see how this little one grows out. Patty- I hope you don't feel like I'm upset about my hatch or my one chick because I'm not! If anything he may become the foundation for my Marans stock. I could raise him and put him with my Ameraucanas and EEs and make some Olive Eggers this year. Then next spring we could try again and you could help me build up my stock! I would want to breed Blue Coppers over blacks, just my personal preference.

Those chicks are cuties! I'm trying to contain myself to one breed, the Marans, although I can see several of the color varieities coming! Now, to just get some to start with... As for these, well, they were my first incubator hatch, so at least I got some experience there. If nothing else, some will lay for me to eat, or they will be re-homed. The Blue Copper Marans are really starting to get to me; the more I see them, the better I like them.

Sorry to hijack, Deb & Urban - I had wheaten penedesencas...VERY pretty birds, and yes, quite flighty (which is why I eventually sold them) - BUT - I will say, they were really, really good layers, and the eggs were quite pretty! I doubt mine were from a really good line (just eBay eggs and it was my first hatch), but my girls laid a medium, rich brown with heavy speckling. I loved the speckled eggs - so pretty! I wish someone would breed a line of Speckled Eggers!

Sheesh, I'm doing it mostly by myself. Husband is determined to make me realize how not fun it is. (it's working) Plus 2 kids kinda throw a wrench in the plans. Don't ya know, their life comes first?

I'm going for the Guinness Book of World Records for the SLOWEST builder. I figure I'll win. Next time, I'm buying a Tuff Shed and retrofitting for a coop. This building stuff stinks.
