Hatch Update: 1 is out, dry and bouncing around the bator!

The dropped baby is doing good. I have been able to work the top of the shell off of her. So her head is now stretched out. The back of her neck is really swollen from trying to hatch and she is really tired. I made sure the membrane is not stuck to her bottom, so when she has rested a bit she can pop herself the rest of the way out!

I have 3 more that are pipped!

Only 4 more yet to show me signs of life!

Has anybody else noticed lately the proliferation of people referring to their Marans as being "booted"?

It makes me want to shove my boot up...

We don't want any boots, just lightly feathered shanks.

In keeping with the thread of Marans, here are some pics of my first attempt at building...ANYTHING! By myself no less. It ain't no Frank Lloyd Wright, but I think I may be able to pull it off to house my chooks! A few friends helped me tonight standing the walls which was hard enough with three helpers let alone trying to do it yourself. Spent the first day building the floor, spent the second day tearing UP the floor cause I made a HUGE error. Two walls and a roof, nest boxes, pop door, walk in door, electric, window, two vents, ramp, and a run to go!

The back wall needs some more bracing, but this old broad was too tired to cut one more piece of wood today! Turns out, one of the friends, who I haven't seen in a long time, has Cuckoo Marans! She is going to try to build her own coop too. Told her no reason she can't! All of her family have poo-pooed the idea and laughed at her, but if crippled old me can do it, crippled young her can do it! Told her to call me when she gets ready. Even her Mom had to drive some screws! They were all getting into it, so may have a bit more help in the future...I hope WOMAN POWER!!!

Janice i can't believe a judge marked up your show card for Falsing because your birds were so Shiney ...... wow !!!!!! Who was this Judge ? ..... oh oh my my ......... drats .... did you burst out laughing so loud that judge could hear ?
Another seed you can add is safflower seeds ..... you are on the RIGHT Track !!!!!!

I've got to tell you about my birds ........ i've gotten the ones out of the newly imported Marans both "Black Copper" and "Wheaton" ..... wooppeee.... lol ............ plus monday going to Newnan to pick up 14 Wade Jean's Black Coppers from Mr Culpepper (mydarkeggs) ......... Happy Days

I didn't know you could Fake shiney... I will try the Safflower thing too. I make sure I give em lots of healthy goodies.... Like Cranberries etc... They really are shiney.

The hatch is still going!!! I swear these are the slowest chicks I have ever hatched.

AAANNNNDDDD!!!!! GREAT NEWS!!!! The dropped baby is dry and bouncing around with 3 brothers and sisters, 1 is still a little slow, not sure if it will make it or not. 2 more are still working on hatching and the last 2 died without even pipping internally.

I'll have pics up once I move them to the brooder!
