OMG! I just realized after this hatch I now have 57 chickens!

Maybe I won't tell my husband since he doesn't count them himself

Rustywoman: They (your GC's) Look just like the parent stock... I really like the eggs I got from the one I hatched from her... They are beautiful... I hope you are not dissappointed.. I sure think she has nice Goldens... I am glad to see what you ended up with.. super nice... They look nothing like hatchery birds... Cant wait to see them lay...How old is she now???? I believe mine laid around the 6th month if I remember correctly...

Rustyswoman they are beautiful I really like the color on the last one are yours from Lori too? They don't look little either. I say weigh them then if you need more size only hatch the biggest eggs weigh the chicks keep notes that way you'll learn which ones to cull out. I know some strains of Marans are on the small side and I have some smaller hens too so I won't raise my replacements from any little hens under 6lbs. I'll be working towards the SOP as it's written now and since I love my chicken dinners will lean towards the bigger ones....

Thanks you two! After I got out there and started seeing them next to the other hens they didn't look quite as small as I thought. Next to Solomon my Light Sussex Roo they are tiny though! For some reason he doesn't like them either. Always chases them away from the food. He needs his own pen with his own women.

Geebs, the were hatched out 1/19/10 so that makes them...27 weeks old. Hmmmm they should be laying about now.?

I will have to seperate them to get them pure. Rats, I didn't realize they were that old.

kathy , i was wondering if you are getting any eggs from your wheaten marans ?

i think my first generation hens are laying but i havent traped a hen yet to comferm or if its the parrent birds laying and i am miss counting

LOL. Remember your chicken math: 57 = 5+7 = 12. Only twelve chickens!

Until you get the feed bill, then, they are either REALLY BIG EATERS, or you actually DO have 57 chickens!

Went into lockdown on Wed evening. Came home Friday afternoon to 1 bcm chick and several others zipping and pipping. Sorry, no pics, camera bit the big one at the bottom of a ditch.

I will update on Sunday with my final total.
