NinjaPoodles, WOW! Outstanding egg!! As good as any I've seen.

If you decide to sell eggs, put me down for a dozen!

Some time back, there was lots of talk about Wheaten chicks popping up in Black Copper lines. In late September, I had 5 mysteriously appear among my BC chicks. 3 roos and 2 hens. Here are 3 of them as adults:

One of the hens started laying about a month ago. Her first 4 eggs didn't hatch. Here's what hatched today from eggs 5 and 6:

Can you spot the Wheaten chick???

Looks like the BC Wheatens will produce more Wheatens. Of course, 2 chicks do not establish breeding true, but it looks good so far. So far, ALL are feather footed!

I've got a combo offer up on the BST forum right now, cheap (BCM & possible Olive Eggers).

I have to shut down incubation for a while because I have a trip coming up and I need the brooder to be EMPTY in July, but I'd like to have some of your eggs later this summer, too, Greg!

The wheaten chicks are darker than usual. Wheaten Marans chicks are usually yellow. The chicks in the pic are clearly wheaten but might have picked something like mahogany from the copper blacks.

A couple of my BC Marans chicks I hatched out a few weeks ago (4-5?) are rumpless! How common is this? Is it genetic?

I wouldnt think its common. Im not sure rumpless marans are a good thing, but I do love Araucanas, so I bet they are cute! Do you have any pictures?

I hatched two BC chicks/cockerels this winter and I thought one of them was rumpless! He also had rather short wing feathers. But his tail feathers (and wing feathers) eventually caught up with the rest of him (took 3 months?) He now looks like the other cockerel...

I think it must be a genetic oddity in some of the Marans. I'm sure happy he finally became "normal"! I didn't know what I was going to do with a rumpless Maran!

Someone posted about an apparently rumpless Marans on a different thread.
Presumably these late developing or not developing birds are not from the same breeder? (Short wing feathers too?) How curious.....I wonder what causes it. It wouldn't be a trait I'd want in my birds.

Wow Greg!
I have been wondering what had become of you and your Wheaten project. I am so proud for you. What kind of egg color are you getting?

Uh Oh I think I may have two roos here. How fast do Marans develop combs? Both of these guys have very prominent combs starting and they should be just about 3 1/2 weeks old. they have much more development than the two Auaracans that are a week older or than the brown leghorn that is the same age. I know comparing different breeds is like comparing a Granny smith to a golden delicious, but that's all I have to go on.

Any ideas about sex on these two? Two Auracanas on the left.

They look like roos to me. My CM hens had softer bone structure and features, and your two seem to have more masculine looking faces -- (particularly the skull structure around the top brow area of their eyes). But they're cute, that's for sure!
