Angel wing is where the primary flights do not fold under the secondaries properly, and instead, grow outward from the body.

If yours are anywhere else on the wing, sounds like you could have a frizzle.

here's what a couple of mine looked like that I was referring to

you would think that he would, but apparently almost all marans have inhibitor genes which make the bird grow up normal looking. Yes, his shoulder feathers stuck up too. As an adult you can't tell though. It is my best roo.

Man, chicken genetics are sooooo cool. An inhibitor to frizzling is just wicked... hmmmm okay eventually maybe I can use that to play inside my sizzle project.

If I breed a maran's that started with curlies, and then mastered them...it would have inhibitor genes and I could use it to make big sizzles with a frazzle... (too curly Sizzle.) Someone stop me. LOL.

BTW that Roo is drop dead gorgeous and it's what attracted me to the breed in the first place. The Roos make my heart sing.

Thanks for the replies (and pictures)

This little chick is deffinately not a Frizzle. It is a small "clump" of 4 of 5 feathers that stick straight up. Like, they are at a complete right angle to it's body. And it is not mid-feather this happens, it is right at the base

I just hope this bird doesn't have any kind of "problem"

I have always wondered if I bred this bird to any hen that for sure did NOT have the frizzle inhibitor gene, if any of his babies would show curly, or if it is a gene he might be homozygous for and take two generations to breed out fifty percent of the time... by which time the egg color would be completely trashed, not to mention the phenotype... oh well. I wouldn't mine a flock of frizzled marans... ain't gonna happen.

edit because what I typed didn't say what i thought

Ok so I just finally downloaded a bunch of pictures and had to share how much my cockeral "Tank" has changed in the last 3 months. I never realized until I was looking at the pcitures.

I have 2 Cuckoo Maran chicks that have pure, snow white markings instead of the normal cream colored markings. It looks like they are both cockerels. Is the snow white a throwback color? Here is a pic of one of the chicks and one of my hens and roo.

Well since hatching my 5 Black Copper peeps four months ago, I've been totally tripping on the fact that I couldn't tell the baby roosters from the baby hens for the longest time. It turns out, they're all baby hens. w00t!

and my 2 Cuckoo girls have been laying for a few weeks now. I'm pretty thrilled with their eggs...nice dark brown with purplish-brown splotches...
