Everybody needs to remember that ALL "black copper" Marans have the birchen trait, since the black copper pattern is BASED on birchen (ER). The main difference between black copper and birchen birds is the presence of silver or gold. And a lot of "birchen" birds are carrying gold, so there's a lot of mixed flocks out there

Sorta seems like you avoided answering her question. I too like to know about feathers being on my Birchens shanks.
Maybe you can help me with my question. The first time you mentioned this, was after I showed pics of my Birchens, sorta giving everyone, DROM and me the thought that you were implying my birds had this fault. DROM asked for you to point out in the pics what you are seeing? Now I will ask, can you please show us pics?
We here in INDY are a bit slow, we like the books with pictures. lolol
PLEASE either illustrate with a pic, or here since you had mentioned it the first time after I posted pics, here use my pics to help you explain what you are trying to say. lololol Now I know one bird in the pics are had Ameraucana and Birchen Marans, I know he is not pure Birchen. Lets us know what you are seeing? I am curious and sure others are too.

Spot~

Crazy thing is I have a Splash hen that was culled to the laying flock for laying an egg just like you described. When it is washed off it is a beautiful egg, not quite as dark as I would like but still a Marans. When it dries after being wiped off it dries back to the chalky purplish color. This is the second hen that I have had that layed an egg like this.....the other gal that lays a similar egg is her mother.....go figure. Playing around I have crossed both mother and daughter with one of my Splash roos and one of my Black copper Roos....to see if I can reproduce this egg color. I will be sure to post updates as time progresses.

Here is that egg on the left with another Marans egg from the laying flock that didn't make the grade. The 2nd photo is just after it was wiped off.

WHAAAT???? Okay pinkchick... you are saying photo one...(with three too light eggs) contains the same egg as photo number two.. (the one with six dark nice eggs).... Is this true?? Which egg??? I have one that lay a milky purple egg that looks like it has a coating... other than that... she is a great specimen... It looks like milky coating that turns the egg a purple color... I just never "wiped it off".... I just eat it and kiss her and feed her etc... Her eggs are of exceptional quality with nice round shape etc...

Jan~
Yes Ma'am! The two biggest eggs in the front of the second photo are from that gal after I wiped them off. You can see the one on the right that is starting to dry again just on the bottom of the large end of the egg. Yes one of those to eggs is the same egg from the first photo, I just can't remember which one. Here is another photo of the same eggs and you can see that they are starting to dry a bit more and turn back to the chalky purplish appearance. They are the 2 eggs in the middle.
Crazy HUH?

How much oystershell are you giving yours??? I was told by a reputable sourse that it could be too much oystershell, however I am giving them all the same and yet the result is so different... Maybe they need oiled.... maybe their female organ isn't giving them the protection that they need for bacteria barrier... Anyone want to chime in here... We need an eggxpert..!!!!!!!!!!

It's just the bloom. I have had that on some other eggs. Actually, I have witnessed a hen laying an egg, and I saw the wet bloom dry to an off color. It is the bloom that you wash off of those.

I'm sorry you think so, but I don't know how I could make this any more clear: "Blue copper x blue copper will produce black copper, blue copper, and splash copper offspring on average. "
