These were some of the eggs laid by these birds.

I hatched eggs from her last summer, and finally got babies.

Yee HAW, Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain!!!! Look it those sweet faces and feathery feet! The egg color ain't so slouchy either!! Way to go! It was TOTALLY worth it to get those eggs to you. Proud to have my babies in AK, brightening up your egg basket. There is NO egg as cool as a dark copper black marans egg, excep maybe an Emu egg, but I doubt those do so well in AK in the winter... Can you imagine?

Nope. Not very well at all. There's an Emu in Anchorage, though... 11 years old I think. Someone put it on CL! I just hope someone warned him that they are illegal here.

The first set of eggs I lost them all... half didn't go past one week, and the rest went to full term before quitting without hatching.

I was so bummed!! But then when I got pips on this set, I knew we were golden. They all have beautiful feathering on the feet, and yes... very sweet faces. One loves to sleep on his/her side with the legs stretched out straight. LOL!
I will have to send another package your way this summer...

I've a hankering for lavender orps too...

Hi, fellow Marans lovers! I've been meaning to post a few pics of an interesting egg, so here goes. I've got a Marans hen that typically lays a very dark egg, but every now & then, she lays one that apparently has a coating of some sort over the top; not all her eggs are like this, only about one in ten. The coating makes the egg appear lavendar - it's really pretty - just thought I'd share:

Here's her egg, along with a few other Marans, an F1 olive egger, and a silver penciled rock egg for comparison - it's actually a bit darker lavender color, but I used a flash to make sure to get all the details so it's a bit "washed out" looking:

Presto/chango! Run it under water, and....

Here it is, beginning to dry....

And a bit drier....

Now almost dry again:

Isn't it crazy? I know there was someone over on the Yahoo Marans board that had a hen that laid eggs like this; I feel like I remember her saying she was going to hatch some & see if she couldn't reproduce hens that lay like this consistently. Does anyone else have a hen that lays a "lavender" egg?

Not me, but that sure is a pretty egg! I love the color change, and the speckles. That would be worth setting some eggs for!

I've had a few of those, too... I wonder if it's just a very fine calcium deposit coating the eggs...

Very pretty assortment there!!

WELL ..... I sure wish I had egg pictures to show! My oldest Marans are now about 24 weeks old. I took a few pictures today.

What is this Marans called? I admit, I have my Jersey Giants and Marans together in the grow out pen, and there is a possibility it may be a JGiant. However, if it is .... It would also be totally not per the SOP !
