That shiny coating is just bloom - some lay a thicker coating of bloom than others. Marans eggs are actually supposed to be quite glossy - and more round than oval. If you've ever seen a Marans egg contest, the winners are very glossy, with both ends appearing exactly the same - it's very difficult to tell which is the fat end on a "good" Marans egg! I don't know why that is the preferred, as it sure makes them hard to set!

Illia, on your BC roo; the proposed standard states: moderately large, straight, upright, evenly serrated with five points - hope that helps!

I had a BC roo that had a weird eye issue too - much worse than yours, and I'm not sure it is the same issue, but see here:

ETA: My darkest layer actually lays eggs sans bloom...frustrating.

Thought I would hop in and post a few egg pics, I have chicks coming out the wazoo right now so I have resorted to eating the eggs

They are Wheaten Marans I got from Buddy Henry last year. Super nice guy... I would love to get into the blue wheatens if I can find some with good egg color....


They are surrounded by Buff Orpington Eggs. The one on the right is a first egg for one of my young hens.

kiltednerd - Buddy Henry has VERY VERY nice stock, IMO. I acutally just received three BC cockerels from him a few weeks ago. He's great to work with, really knows his stuff, and I absolutely cannot WAIT to introduce the best of the three Cottage Hill boys to my flock! Nice eggs!

I live less than an hour from him and made the trip to pickup.....Super stock, well kept... I need to talk to him about some of his lavender orpington project

Pinkchick: Are you actually trying to hatch and breed for the lavender egg trait? Because I've always LOVED those lavender eggs and wondered if anyone has tried breeding for the trait with success. . . I hear someone on this thread has a hen who lays almost nothing but those super coated eggs.
