That shiny coating is just bloom - some lay a thicker coating of bloom than others. Marans eggs are actually supposed to be quite glossy - and more round than oval. If you've ever seen a Marans egg contest, the winners are very glossy, with both ends appearing exactly the same - it's very difficult to tell which is the fat end on a "good" Marans egg! I don't know why that is the preferred, as it sure makes them hard to set!
Illia, on your BC roo; the proposed standard states: moderately large, straight, upright, evenly serrated with five points - hope that helps!
