geebs lost one of the BHB's tonight...He/she pipped and zipped and was too tired to finish, however another is crawling around making a fuss and I hear another chirping... It is always such a worry with shipped chickies.. Poor baby that didn't make it... I makes me sad... I hope I have a roo!!!
Good night marans fans...Thanks Bayhorsebonne!!! I have so far one fuzzy butt... I will post pix tomarrow...Wow Cree's and Bonnes for me!!!.... Pretty sweet B-day
Oh I had Golden Cuckoo... they are pretty sweet birds... There is a trio by me for sale for 60 bucks... a real steal if they are the good ones... My friend bought a trio a while back, that is what I hatched mine from... I just kept her long enough to see the egg color...It was a shocker... Beautiful color.. Just didn't have a roo to go with her...so I didn't keep her.
My friend may be able to ship you eggies.. I can ask if you want me to..
Hello I been trying to keep up with this thread on all the Marans and all the breeds , to me it seems like some are looking to keep the breeds true like wade jeane / ron preslry bev davis on the BC Marans Blue Marans- Wheaten and the Cockoo Marans .
But reading all this threads it also seems that some people are looking for the darkest color Marans eggs which seems to me that there mixing and matching breeds and Lines to do this .
Now by doing this are we not raising true breed lines for the breeders and would there offspring be pure breed , but from different line , Im thinking for show birds they would not have any true value , but for the back yard breeder looking for the darkest color eggs it would be the worth they wild .
So this is my question do most breeders mix and match lines to get a better looking true breed bird or just for =very dark egg color or is the practice for some back yard breeders to get the deepest dark brown egg coloring , and by this the true breed Marans would not be true to say of the following breeds , say BC Marans / Blue Copper Marans / Wheaten or even the Cuckoo Marans..........
I would like to hear from both or all sides of this subject ,
I plan on raising a few different true breeds this year and will be selling hatching eggs for the coming year and was just wondering why some people mix and match breeds and colors of the Marans .

I myself like to experiment. I have a flock of Wheatens and Blue Wheatens who are pure Bev Davis, and a flock of Black Coppers who are pure Bev Davis. Then I also have a flock that is Wade Jeane x Bev Davis, and then another flock that is Bev Davis x Wade Jeane/Presley. (not my creation)
Through time, I'll be seeing who creates better conformation and who creates better eggs.
Personally though I'm someone who likes keeping true colors and true breeds, and I don't like mixing lines - But it does help, and it also helps you learn what could happen.
I'm not just for the egg though - To me, the bird itself MUST at least not be mossy, not have a squirrel tail, be of proper weight, have feathered shanks, not be blonde (for a Black Copper) not have brown in the chest (for a Wheaten) and so on. . .
Also, a Marans to me must lay an egg that is a 7 or higher on the scale. 6's are allowed when the cycle tapers. 5's are only allowed for "layer hens" - Those eggs will be sold for eating.
Don't know if there are any for sale anymore... ? I tried doing a search, and couldn't find any. Here's a link to the chart... you might try saving the photo, and adjusting the tint for the white background.

I don't work with Wheatens but I do work with blue and splash. My guess is that you could use a Splash Copper rooster over a wheaten hen, but this is only a guess! Hoping someone that is working on them comes by to help you out with your question.
