Actually it is better that you got them as day olds... He could have grabbed the chick out of the wrong bucket ya know... I would ask him.. it may not be that bad... it appears that the person owns a feed store so he probably is busy as heck and this kind of mess up would be more understandible then... I would definetly call... They are having a big deal this weekend. This would definetly be the time to jump on it!!! Want the number?

I kinda got the impression that he just brought me all that he had at that age group. I asked for 6, and paid for 6 BCMs, but he gave me 8 chicks. I assumed he didn't want to have 2 lonely chicks left

Before I get to speculating too much, I'd better call. Otherwise I'll have him mentally portrayed as a lying, conniving devil before I go to bed tonight

I still have his number in my phone, thanks.

I'm new to FBCMarans Breed. I need help in choosing which of these two eight week old roosters should I keep. They are both handsome but I can only keep one so one has to go. If you were to choose one which one is a keeper?.

One is black and the other is blue.

Here are some pics.
The one in front is the blue he is slightly bigger than the black.

It's really too early to tell how they compare to the "standard" -- can take up to 6 months really.
Since they are different colors I guess it's an easy choice of which color do you intend to breed for??

Rather than double posting...here's a picture of one of my BCM boys. He escaped the bachelor pad today, so I caught him after dark to put him back. I feel like I should refrain from clipping their wings until I can tell their true colors....all my "to eat" roos got a prison cut tonight to ensure less escapes in the future.
He was very well behaved in the house, especially considering that my Marans chicks are my least handled, wildest raised babies yet. This feller seems a little on the light side, and has smaller legs than the others.

Not very photogenic, is he?

I did hatch mine and EE/marans cross could be in the mix. I know you shouldn't assume, but I thought with the black legs and feathered shanks it was pure, My bad! Not upset at all, just wish it was a pullet!

Hello fellow Marans lovers! I haven't been around much lately, spring is very busy around here! I just have some awesome news to share with you. I have been selling my EE's eggs for eating. Well a very nice lady stopped by 2 days ago and asked if I had chicks or chickens for sale. I told her that I currently do not but I could speak to my husband about firing up the bator (he has put me on a no hatching timeout). Well this lady and I got to talking and I told her I have BCMarans but they won't start laying until June and I wouldn't be setting the bator with them until the end of July, maybe later. (My husband already said once their eggs are getting larger he will let me do a test hatch.) This lady said she wants to wait for the BCM chicks. She wants 6 pullets and doesn't want to brood them herself. I told her I will charge $6.00 per chick (day old) and $4 per chick to raise to 6 weeks. She gave me $60 right then and there! I told her she did not have to pay now but she insisted! I can't believe I already have pre-ordered BCM chicks and my pullets are still a month from laying!

How long can you keep them before one has to go??? Do you know whose lines/stock these birds may have originated from??

My pick of which one I would keep is the black one. Even though I am fanatical about blues their is something off with this little guy and his coloring. I don't suspect that he will change much as he grows. IMO he has too much red and its the wrong color in the hackle area and am I seeing some shafting on those breast feathers... I can't really see it clearly in the pic???

I have grown out many little blue roos that looked like him and they did not color out correctly. The copper was not where it was suppose to be and the copper was very brassy and straw colored. I hatched them out from a cross between my solid Blue Marans hens and my WAAAAAYYYYYY tooooo dark Blue Copper Roo just to see what I would get, they never really had a chance at being correct in the first place as it would take a a few generations to get the coloring correct from that cross. They were pretty, they were just colored wrong, they looked like a blue bird with random splashes of copper all over. I called them my little "patchwork" roos.

I suspect that the red on the black boys chest will feather out to all black and IMO he has the better comb.

Hoping more will come by and give their opinions.

Oh BTW: Welcome to the wonderful world of Marans!

Pinkchick/ Tala,
Thank you for your feedback. I guess I'll have too wait until they are more mature. I'm inclining towards black CM roaming around my yard. I think they're closer to a true breed. By the way I bought the eggs from a fellow BYC'er. The parent stock are from Ray Valentine (hen) and from Ron Presley and Fox bloodlines I believe. As I've previuosly mentioned, I'm new to this breed so I just bought the most affordable fertile eggs available then when I decided to to do so. I'm just fascinated by dark brown eggs that they lay. If otherwise I'm more of a serious hobbyist type, would you recommend another breeder with better FBCM bloodline? if so which one is a better choice?
Thanks

Pinkchick while you are sitting in the corner in "timeout" you can hatch a couple in your shirt!!! ha ha
