You answered my question from years ago... Thanks BLACKDOTTE!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wondering . . . I have a Black Copper Marans chicken that is 19 weeks tomorrow. Very red in the comb. Do Marans hold true to the 5 month mark to start laying or do they take longer??? Also, no copper around the neck?? This is her on the left.

They can take up to 7 months to lay... She is starting to get red... that is a good lay sign..

Very cute.. They don't always show thier copper... If you are to breed her for babies, an overcolored rooster, one with too much red will correct that problem in the subsequent offspring. She has too much melanizers that cover the copper (too much black)

Thanks geebs! I don't breed, I just like a colorful egg basket! Filled the nest boxes and put in the fake eggs!

Here are a couple pics of my 12 week old BC roos the colors on both of them are very vivid the black has highlights of deep plum and iridescent green they are the size of the Dellie hens that are hatch mates so smaller than the Dellie roos but they seem pretty wide and deep just not as leggy. I want to raise dual purpose and the dark eggs these so far are not quite as big as the Cuckoos at the same age

I have a favorite but I'm not telling which one

My daughter almost has me convinced to try keeping one out of three BCM marans males we hatched. Which one? One is larger and has great feathering but I think it's because he's pulling the feathers out of the other two. The second one has the orangist eyes but a funnier comb. The third is the smallest and has few tail feathers. Here they are and please don't hold back.

3 roos, view of their combs:
