Thanks guys,

I was really starting to wonder from seeing the photos posted and seeing all the gray feet. I knew something had to be up with the 3 I have in my 16. I guess that's not too bad of odds. We diffentanly won't breed those 3 for Marans. I wonder if it would be safe to do so with the others? I had thought of seeing if we had a hen that was broody to try letting her hatch some fuzzies.

I love the look of the chicken on your avitair, What kind is it?

That was a rescue chick, found it on the counter by the checkout at a local "bird store" with a "FREE" sign taped to it. It was skin and bones, probably two weeks old. I took it home and it grew up to be a little cockerel, blue splash, with odd, snakey neck movements that made me think it might be from fighting stock. I gave it to my friend who had two point of lay RIR pullets and they killed it because he didn't introduce them, he just put them together, RIP little bluebird...

oops. sorry, that is my mille fleur cochin boy! I have another chicken avatar in a different forum, the goofy splash boy i posted about above! This one is alive and well, penned with seven mottled girls, just ready to start trying to make some mille fleur babies! Four have started laying so far. I am waiting for the weather to cool off for now. The eggs are little, and if you fry them sunny side up they fit real nice on an English Muffin.

Thank Goodness Onthespot you had me worried there for a minute . That is just a nice looking chicken I may have to get me a couple of mille fleur cochins. That one almost looks like patch work. Or a big ball of verigated yarn I like it.

OT too, but here goes:

I would like to try to have your mille fleur cochin offspring mix with my mille fluer D'uccle frizzles offspring. We may need that mix for this project eventually? Pokey has mottled cochins and was interested in the mille fleur frizzled cochins. I was wondering if this would be a way to get them?
What do you think? How could we get Frizzled Mille Fleur Cochins?

hey guys I have a lil pullet who was sold to me as a barred rock, but now people are telling me she's probably a cuckoo maran.
What's Your opinion?

I vote for Cuckoo Marans pullet, or a pretty close mix, which I have also, (I have Cuckoo Marans mixed with others, and they strongly resemble their Cuckoo Marans parent) and you sure will be able to tell when she's laying pretty eggs!!
(and theres always an "s" at the end of Maran"s"...., so it's Marans, not Maran, just to let you know before you get spanked by the 'fessional folks)

Regarding pronunciation, is it true that the 's' at the end of "Marans" is silent? Just to make everything more confusing! And is it, 'muh-RAHN' or 'muh-RAN?"

The S is silent and some of the top breeders also say that Marans is pronounced like the name Karen. With all due respect on the second item I believe I disagree. I think if it were pronounced like Karen it would be spelled something like Marennes.

I do not think the French pronounce it that way. Maybe I will try to research and then post the phonetic spelling.
