March 2017! Hatch with us!

Maybe a warm spot in the incubator? Or a hen pre-incubated it??

Which brings me to a question for you guys. I think I have a hen trying to go broody. I have no idea how long she sat on the eggs I removed from under her. What if I incubate them? Should I toss them? Should they be eaten or not? I know it couldn't have been more than 9 hours, while I was gone to work.

It's probably okay - I wouldn't sell it to anyone, but, our family eats all my "?" eggs, and so far, so good (although I usually break those eggs open in a separate little bowl to give them a good sniff-a-roo first :sick)

The breeder agreed we probably have some mixes in this batch. Still cute as ever!

I had to assist several yesterday. Not sure why they had trouble zipping. Membranes were extra tough.

But I ended up with 8 out of 10 lavender orpingtons, 5 of 6 bantam cochins, and the single silver duckwing OEGB that made it to lockdown hatched!

Due next weekend - 2 (?) more silver duckwings, 3 self-blue OEGBs and 2 Ohikis. Although I suspect one of the Ohikis might quit before then.

The following week is my 23 call ducklings!! And sometime in between all that are 3 broodies sitting on Seramas and chocolate orpingtons!

Oh My Gracious! They are so precious and so pretty! Congratulations!!!

Sooooo...a somewhat bad habit of mine is to "low bid" on eBay for hatching eggs from breeds I already have (thinking to myself that adding a little new blood is a good thing, and If I can get a decent price, then if only 1 or 2 hatch I'm ahead) . I do it so often, and rarely win anything, that I forget about them. Last night, just as I was getting ready to turn in, I quickly checked email, and there was a "YOU WON" notice!! 10+ Bielefelder eggs will be headed my way this week!! Wahoo!

I wasn't aware of egg auctions on ebay. I love your strategy! If you don't win the auction you haven't lost abything bcs you do't possess it to loose. If you win, you win BIG by getting a great value for something you can well utilize.
I'd like to try this (when I get the incubator I will ask about on this thread once I'm caught up reading). This thread has been so valuable and also inspiring for me that I am strongly considering a novice bator now after decidedly Refusing to get one.
It's all your fault. (sorry but I HAVE to blame somebody)

Lockdown finished from 19 eggs tossed 2 not got the whole jest of this candling down yet a few ifs in the bunch but also collected after the attack with no Roo in the yard so my prognoses if I get 5 I'll be suprised and happy. Then onto my EEs for Easter!! If all goes well I'll be putting up a dozen EEs a dozen variety including RIRs, Dons, and maybe some ROs and then I'm adding since I have had roosters now for two weeks at least a dozen of mine so at least 36 or if I'm lucky I'll try to place 48 in the cooker and have my first rack full!
Oh...and THEN you're adding?!
You're great at chicken math...if I remember correctly you did 48 long-shots then this 25, you've mentioned the next several incubations. And THEN you're adding? What do you call this? If I could only get the reasoning process down better I'd be buying the incubator already.
You are a funny bird.

I have not ran into any deformities. The chick I assisted last wknd hadn't tucked its head under its right wing but that was it. Last week it was a smaller egg that had the issue, where as this week it's a bigger egg. It has me a little complexed to say the least. I just want to make sure it's not something I'm doing which out of 30 eggs to have 3 pip the wrong end doesn't point to anything I'm doing. At least I hope that's not the case and am slowly insuring myself it isn't.

I just stopped by the house to check on them and two have hatched sense 8:30 this morning. The poor guy who piped wrong still hasn't progressed so once I get home for the evening I may assist him.

I wish I could respond to the pip on wrong end aspect. I don't have enough experience to comment at all but many people on this thread DO. I trust that when you return home, you'll have a bunch of great feedback. I hope when you get home that the feedback is filed under "just in case info" bcs the chick would be hatched on its own. A touch of airy thinking perhaps, I am influenced by the lovely morning we're having here.
That was a way too long way to say, I wish you and the goofy pipper much sucess. Maybe you've already updated (?) Probably since one day offline yesterday I missed so much but I refuse to miss this great thread so I'm ditching email and FB in order to spend all computer time catching up yesterday and today.
The very best to you and your peeps!

Got turkeys on lockdown. So nervous! Last time I incubated turkeys, no eggs even started developing. Need these 4 to hatch, and need at least 1 hen. Go little eggs, go!
This is TOO exciting! I will Not move until I've read thru to the end of the thread and I'm caught up.
This is like wanting to read the last chapter in a good book so I know how it turns out! Go Turkeys Go!

This hatch is only my second now on lockdown from 25 on this hatch lockdown have 17 some were not fertile but yes I got a bad case of math I have 2 doz on the way and started collecting eggs for round 3 trying for a half a box this time at 48 eggs. Then after I'm back from Texas I just might do a late year hatch and my dutchie decided to help she is sitting on 11 herself so I'm lost as to any more numbers this dang chicken math :gig or did I miss something else too??? I'm lost!! :gig ohhhhhh wait I did my cats helping me too!
