March 2017! Hatch with us!

This hatch is only my second now on lockdown from 25 on this hatch lockdown have 17 some were not fertile but yes I got a bad case of math I have 2 doz on the way and started collecting eggs for round 3 trying for a half a box this time at 48 eggs. Then after I'm back from Texas I just might do a late year hatch and my dutchie decided to help she is sitting on 11 herself so I'm lost as to any more numbers this dang chicken math

Just checked my dutchie I've got problems!! She is off the nest it's cold outside and she seems like she's not going back to it looks she kept them dry but looks like she couldn't deal with the rain and cold for her she has abandoned the nest m intervening hopefully I can save one of them!

Saw that you put them in the bator, but if you have some spares, you may put them back outside for her. She may go back to the nest. If she does, and the ones hatch in the bator, you can slip the babies to her to still raise. Since she did do most of the sitting.

What??? Quail don't blink? Do you mean they don't blink while they're zipping? or that they don't blink Ever at all? That's quite bizarre!

She means they zip so fast if you blink you'll miss it.

oops, my bad. Can I blame it on..let's see, I got up really early this morning.
I can't believe some of the things I think sometimes, and worse that I say them!
But thanks for clearing that p. I was fixing to google it later...

I'm sorry... but seriously, they zip in like 10 minutes.

No spares not even phony eggs but I'm sure she left them because she would have died trying to keep them warm the nest was dry but looked like she got wet and cold it's natures way of survival I'll let her rest up and try to fill back out she would only come off the nest long enough to eat drink and poo then as fast as she could back to the nest the long way around trying to keep the nest site secret that's why I didn't have anything on her she was so secretive as to where her nest was even to me. Took almost a week to find it she was smart at outwitting me as to the location come to find out it wasn't even 20 ft away lol ( smart cookie) if any hatch and I'm even praying for just one I'll raise it with the ones that hatch so they have quasi siblings to keep warm with and then older they will be put in my new coop for my bantams and reunited with moma I was thinking about trying to hatch some dutchie later on this year anyway

Awww I'm kinda sad for her.

I had a broody last year, and candled her eggs when I thought they were about done. Every one was scrambled! So I took them and gave her 4 new ones, figuring she wouldn't stick for another 21 days, but she did! And 3 hatched.

It was her first brood so I know by this summer she will have a coop to stay safe in and will not be bothered with any large birds was hoping that if all went well I could set some quail eggs under her shed no bigger than a quail smallest chicken I ever have seen !!

I wasn't aware of egg auctions on ebay. I love your strategy! If you don't win the auction you haven't lost abything bcs you do't possess it to loose. If you win, you win BIG by getting a great value for something you can well utilize.
I'd like to try this (when I get the incubator I will ask about on this thread once I'm caught up reading). This thread has been so valuable and also inspiring for me that I am strongly considering a novice bator now after decidedly Refusing to get one.
It's all your fault. (sorry but I HAVE to blame somebody)

:cd

:gig Haha - I'll gladly own the blame! When you decide to take the incubator plunge, do a bunch of research, because there are all kinds of terrible ones, and a few kinds of good ones. (Have I mentioned how much I love my Hovabator 1588 Genesis? Oh, yes, I guess I have... at least once....maybe twice...okay, perhaps more than that!!! I'm not a sales rep, I promise! Although maybe I should be...

Congratulations! These are beautiful chicks! Are they the cream legbars? I love the little eyeliner. I'm also thinking one of my pullets that I got recently hatched last year has to have some CL in her. What do they look like all grown up?

These are just a couple of stock photos, I don't have any grown ups yet .

I purchased a Chinese incubator because I did not have the money for a hocabator so I got a 96 egg one for around 65 dollars it's not the best but it will hatch an egg!! But I will build me one set up as I like it and I won't cry about disassembling this Chinese one for parts as I would a hovabator

When my Chinese one died, I replaced the motor for the turner with a plug-in model (since the original was hard-wired). Stuck it under the bed and forgot about it.
Then started working on this cabinet and remembered that turner! Fits perfectly!

Looks great!!

Just a little too empty!

Actually now there are 5 test eggs in it. 2 were several weeks old, one had gotten realllllllly cold, actually had condensation on it after I brought it inside, darn near frozen, and 2 normal eggs. I can't remember what day I put them in there, I wasn't planning to fully incubate them. But I checked last night, and I have veins in 3. The strongest veins are in the egg that was cold.

If only I could sell more chicks, I'd fill it up! I've got eggs coming out my ears!
