March 2018 Hatch-a-long

Pics
Pip to zip in about 3 hours. IMG_20180310_101448305.jpg Pun names might be fun, so here is chick number Juan and hopefully soon to be siblings.

Day 21 has arrived! Total hatch so far:
I set 29 eggs. Five were either infertile or damaged-it was quite cold and several eggs froze solid. Two early quitters. Put 22 eggs in lockdown.
2/2 Orpington/Marans crosses hatched-they are the one of cutest things I’ve ever seen. A gorgeous orangey-red down.
We have 9/10 Olive Eggers. The remaining egg appears to be deceased.
9/10 Marans have hatched. One was in poor condition and unable to stand upright, kept flipping on its back. Poor thing. So I ended up culling this morning. :( One Marans egg remaining. It’s still practice breathing in there but hasn’t internally pipped. I came home from the store and humidity had dropped over the last couple of hours from 68% down to 29%. GAH!!! I threw open the door, grabbed the water tray and filled with hot water-also added a third sponge for good measure. Room humidity is 19% so it was steadily dropping but hadn’t completely dried out. UGH. I can’t see into the humidity tray for the Sportsman, it’s opaque white, so I’m left wondering how much water is in there. Clearly, not enough!
Anyway, 20/22 so far, I’m rooting for 23!!
Photo is my Orp-Marans baby.
