March 2018 Hatch-a-long

So is that outer membrane always supposed to be white? I have Marans and Ameraucana eggs in this incubator and any who’s pip is large enough to see under the shell have a white membrane...except this one Ameraucana that looks sort of greenish tan.

Plus, the lavender ameraucana just pipped - that’s the egg I didn’t think would hatch!

Okay, I honestly can’t remember if this is day 18 or 19... I’ve been trying to hatch on Fridays which would make this day 19, oops. I candled everything before it went in. One blue egg was badly cracked and whatever was in there was sloshing around, yiiiiiiiikes. Another brown one quit developing-or never started. It’s hard to see!! Most of the blue eggs had draw down and I’m pretty sure one or two internally pipped already. So, I put everybody in the hatcher and cranked up the humidity.
I set them up so I have one tray of BCM’s and one of Olive Egger/Orpingtons. And I made sure each egg was touching another. I want to test this magical theory that chicks can hear and feel each other and all pop out within two hours of one another...as long as they are all touching.
Here’s hoping for a successful hatch! 258B257E-E361-4A1A-842C-ADF97DEE2129.jpeg 3E8E3874-8149-4BCE-92B3-35E8FB5BB8D3.jpeg

Woke up to a 2nd chick that had just hatched. Really happy I got two and I don’t have to buy more The lavender Ameraucana with porous shell and weird air cell did actually hatch! I’m going to put them in the brooder this afternoon and candle the last dark brown one which hasn’t done anything.

My Marans hatch up to a day after My Ameraucanas!! You won’t be able to see squat when you candle. Pull the babies if you must but leave the dark brown one alone.

12/13 eggs have hatched :) After very little action, the 3 Marans zipped very quickly and hatched within minutes of each other. The only one that hasn't hatched yet is an Ameraucana who was the last to pip by several hours and hasn't made any progress since that one tiny pip last night. I was a bit worried it wasn't even going to pip though, so at least that's progress, and it's still moving around in there :idunno

Check to see if the pip is where the air cell should be. I lost a chick last week that pipped in the middle of the shell, he was malpositioned and couldn’t get out by himself. By the time I intervened it was too late.
(I don’t normally advocate helping if they can’t get out on their own, but in this case he was perfectly healthy, just turned around.)
